Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine recently announced that samul-tang, a formula used to treat age-related conditions such as infertility and menstrual irregularities, increases the oocyte yield in aged females.

In the research, the team used 8 weeks old and 40 weeks old mice, administered distilled water to one group and gave samul-tang to the other group for 4 weeks. The mice group supplied with the herbal formula prevented age-related ovarian follicle loss. And the quality of oocytes and blastocysts were enhanced in samul-tang administrated mice compared to those of non-treated old mice.

Jihyung Kim, one of the authors, explained, “samul-tang triggered changes in aging-related genes linked to RAS-mediated pathway. Thus, we demonstrated samul-tang could be used to increase the oocyte yield in aged women.”

The research was recently published in “Aging.”

Especially, women who are more than 35 years old with poor ovarian responses have a declining oocyte yield in in vitro fertilization, high-dose follicle-stimulating hormone protocols are unsuccessful.

The research team tried to find an alternative to the traditional herbal formula, samul-tang. The formula is well-known mixed herbal medicine comprising equal proportions of Paeonia lactifloraLiqusticum striatumRehmannia glutinosa, and Angelica gigas. Pharmacological effects of the formula include anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, anti-stress, and anti-cancer effects. But mostly, the formula is prescribed to women with gynecological disorders such as irregular menstruation and postmenopausal syndrome.
