29 External Treatments on the Nose 搐鼻法
① It treats migraines and overall headaches due to wind saliva (風涎). Mix 3 don of Piperis Longi Fructus (蓽撥) Grind with Suilus Fel (猪膽) juice. Put this back into the pig’s gall bladder and let dry, Powder 2 don each of Cnidii Rhizoma (川芎), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (白芷), Angelicae Tenuissimae Radix (藁本), Indigo Pulverata Levis (靑黛), Corydalis Tuber (玄胡索). Knead in water and make pills the size of a Euryales Semen (芡實). Instruct the patient to lie down, melt one pill in water, and pour into the nostril and when the medication flows into the throat and the patient tastes the sourness, instruct the patient to sit up. Make the patient bite on a coin to induce drooling. If the saliva fills a cuspidore, it will be cured. This is called A Pellet of Gold (一粒金).
② For migraines or overall headaches, blow a small amount of Grind Mirabilitum (硝石) powder into the nostrils. If the pain is on the left side, blow into the right nostril; if the pain is in the right side, blow into the left nostril. The disease will be cured shortly. Leigong (雷公) said, “For severe pain in the brain, insert Mirabilitum (硝石) powder.”
③ The treatment method that shows miraculous effects on migraines is as follows. Grind Piperis Longi Fructus (蓽撥). Instruct the patient to hold warm water in the mouth and to inhale 2.5 pun through the left nostril if the pain is on the left side, and right nostril if the pain is on the right side. Also, prepare a gruel with Piperis Longi Fructus (蓽撥) powder and take 0.5 don at a time.
④ If there is a sudden headache, blow a small amount of Gleditsiae Spina (皂角) powder into the nostril to induce sneezing.
⑤ To treat migraines, prepare enough raw white radish juice to fill a marsh clam shell. Instruct the patient to lie down and pour it into the nostril. If the pain is on the left side, pour into the left nostril, and if the pain is on the right side, pour into the right side. If the pain is on both sides, pour into both nostrils. This method has miraculous effects and thus chronic patients who had been suffering for several decades are cured within 1~2 treatments. ⑥ Prevent Illness Powder (Get-up Powder), Clear Upper Powder, Six Sages Powder are prescriptions that can be inserted into the nose.
- Prevent Illness Powder (Get-up Powder) 不臥散 불와산 ① It treats unbearable headaches. Seven Corydalis Tuber (玄胡索), Indigo Pulverata Levis (靑黛) 2 don, and Gleditsiae Spina (猪牙皂角) 2 nyang. Grind these drugs, dilute in water, and make into small rice cakes the size of a Armeniacae Semen (杏仁). Instruct the patient to lie straight, dissolve the rice cake in water, and with a bamboo straw, insert the mixture into the left nostril for men, and the right nostril for women. When the medication reaches the throat and thus the patient tastes the sourness, instruct the patient to sit up straight and bite on a coin. If the patient drools enough to fill a cuspidore, the disease will be cured shortly. ② In the Zhang Zihe’s Fomulas (子和方), this is called Indigo Powder, and Gleditsiae Spina (皂角) was replaced with 2 Gleditsiae Spina (皂角).
- Six Sages Powder 六聖散 육성산 It treats all kinds of headaches. It treats toothaches due to head wind ‧‧ head wind syndrome ‧ stuffy nose and coarse voice. Olibanum (乳香), Myrrha (沒藥), Cnidii Rhizoma (川芎), Realgar (雄黃), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (白芷) 2 don each, and Natrii Sulfas (芒硝) 5 don. Grind these drugs. Instruct the patient to lie facing straight up, drink in cold water and instruct the patient to hold it in the mouth, and pour the medication into the nostrils. The effects will show momentarily.
30 Emetic Therapy 吐法 토법
① When there is a Wind headache and the congested liquids are neglected for a long time, the eyes are blinded and thus treatment is impossible. Trichosanthes Guiding Powder stimulates vomiting. After 3 sessions of such emetic therapy, the disease will be treated.
② When an eye disease occurs after head wind, it can be treated even if the sight is half its original state. Induce vomiting with Ledebouriella Powder.
③ For head wind and dizziness, it is good to induce vomiting with Unaccompanied Sagely Pill, and after the vomiting, use a prescription that clarifies the upper body and controls Fire. Thus, add Pinelliae Tuber (半夏), Arisaematis Rhizoma (南星) to Ledebouriella Sagely Unblocking Powder.
④ When the patient cannot endure the headache and stuffiness in the chest due to congested liquids and wants to vomit, induce vomiting with Trichosanthes Guiding Powder.
⑤ In cases where a person who normally has much dampness has a stuffy nose and coarse voice due to headaches, instruct the patient to hold a sip of water in the mouth, and blow 2.5 pun of Trichosanthes Guiding Powder into the nostril until goldish water seeps out.
⑥ A sudden breaking sensation in the head is neither a cold syndrome nor a wind syndrome. This is due to a reversal qi (厥氣) upsurging caused by phlegm in the chest. This is called a reversal headache and it will be cured after vomiting. Prepare tea and drink 1~2 doe and the vomiting will start shortly. Drink again after vomiting to vomit out all the phlegm juice. This method does not harm the patient. When there is thirst, the disease will be cured shortly.
31 Purgation Therapy 下法 하법
① When there is a headache due to heat stagnation in the three yang, and the patient cannot bear to see the sunlight and needs ice on the head, use sweat the promoting, emetic, and purgation therapies.
② When severe chronic head wind causes the dimming of the eyes, or chronic migraines cause pain in the eyes as if the eyeballs are being pulled out of the sockets, and the patient shows constipation and the inability to urinate, induce diarrhea with a Great qi Coordinating Decoction.
③ When the pulse is stirred, the head feels heavy and painful, and there is tidal fever, it is a stomach disease. Induce diarrhea with a Regulate Stomach and Coordinate Qi Decoction to treat.
32 Simple Prescriptions 單方단방
There are 26 kinds in total. There is Gypsum Powder, Nod Powder, Chuanxiong and Gypsum Decoction, Get Up Powder, Liang Capital Pill and Schizonopeta Powder.
- Mirabilitum 硝石 It treats migraines and overall headaches. Blow a small amount of Mirabilitum (硝石) powder into the nostrils. When the pain is on the left side, blow into the right nostril and vice versa. It will cure instantly.
- Gypsum Fibrosum 石膏 ① It treats headaches due to excessive Heat. It is used as a main drug for the treatment of yang brightness headaches. A White Tiger Decoction is an example of such. ② It treats yang brightness headaches. It is highly effective. Grind equal amounts of Gypsum Fibrosum (石膏), Cnidii Rhizoma (川芎) and Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (白芷) and add to tea 3 don at a time. This is called Gypsum Powder.
- Chrysanthemi Flos 甘菊 ① It treats dizziness and headaches due to Wind. Pick the flowers, grind them, and add to alcohol 1 don at a time, and take the mixture twice a day. This can also be taken as alcohol as well. ② Pick the immature stems and leaves, and prepare a broth or combine together with added seasoning. It has a better effect when the flowers are white.
- Osterici Radix 羌活 It treats headaches and dizziness due to pathogenic wind. It is important medicine that treats greater yang headaches. It also treats the pain from head to teeth due to the Wind-toxic pathogen.
- Asiasari Radix et Rhizoma 細辛 ① It treats a shaking sensation in the head due to the Wind headache. It is integral to the treatment of a syndrome caused by a Wind pathogenic factor attacking the head. ② It treats headaches in the kidney meridian. It is effective both ground and decocted.
- Cnidii Rhizoma 芎藭 ① It is mainly used for headaches caused by Wind pathogens penetrating the brain. It is integral to the treatment of the syndrome caused by the Wind pathogenic factor attacking the head. ② It treats migraines and overall headaches. If taken regularly, it can root out the disease. Grind 2 nyang Cnidii Rhizoma (川芎) and 4 nyang Cyperi Rhizoma (香附子) and add to tea 2 don at a time to drink. This is called Nod Powder. ③ It treats headaches due to excessive heat. Slice equal amounts of Cnidii Rhizoma (川芎) and Gypsum Fibrosum (石膏) and decoct in water. This is called a Chuanxiong and Gypsum Decoction. ④ Cnidii Rhizoma (川芎) treats the reverting yin meridian headaches in the brain. ⑤ For migraines, slice into thin pieces and soak in alcohol. It is also effective in powder or brew. ① It is usually used to treat dizziness and headaches due to great pathogenic wind or intermittent syndrome caused by a Wind pathogenic factor attacking the head. Both powder and brew are effective. ② It is a miraculous medicine that treats Wind in the upper part.
- Cassiae Semen 決明子 ① It treats head wind and clears the eyes. It is better than Mung beans to fill pillows. ② When the patient has migraines, knead the powder of Cassiae Semen (決明子) with water and apply onto EX-HN5. It is miraculously effective.
- Xanthii Fructus 蒼耳 ① It mainly treats headaches due to Wind-Cold. ② In the case of a woman when she suddenly feels dizzy and collapses due to blood Wind that enters the head, take 2 don of the core of immature Xanthii Fructus (葈耳) with alcohol. ③ The effects reach the skull and penetrate the crown of the head. Grind into powder or decoct in water for intake. Both are effective.
- Puerariae Radix 葛根 ① It mainly treats headaches caused by a Cold or Wind stroke. Decoct in water for intake. ② It is the drug that treats headaches in the yang brightness meridian.
- Angelica Gigantis Radix 當歸 It treats headaches due to a deficiency of blood. Thinly slice, then decoct in alcohol for intake.
- Ephedrae Herba 麻黃 It mainly treats headaches due to Wind-Cold. Remove the node and decoct in water for intake.
- Angelicae Dahuricae Radix 白芷 ① It mainly treats headaches due to Wind-Heat. It also treats dizziness due to Wind. Make pills to take. This is called a Liang Capital Pill. ② It treats yang brightness headaches in the forehead. It is mostly brewed, but powder forms are effective as well.
- Angelicae Tenuissimae Radix 藁本 ① It mainly treats headaches due to Wind, and eliminates head wind. ② It treats pain in the bregma and pain in the brain and the teeth. It leads various drugs up to the crown of the head. Decoct in water or grind into powder for intake. Both are effective.
- Pinelliae Tuber 半夏 ① It is mainly used to treat dizziness. ② Headaches related to the spleen meridian, which are caused by the adverse rising of phlegm in the spleen meridian, can only be cured with this. Take in decocted form.
- Viticis Fructus, the fructus of vitex rotundifolia L. F. 蔓荊子 ① It is mainly used to treat headaches due to Wind and the pulsating head. Decoct in water for intake. ② It is the medicine that treats headaches in the greater yang meridian. It disperses the wind and treats dizziness and blurred vision.
- Corni Fructus 山茱萸 It is mainly used to treat head wind and pain in the skull. It is also used to treat dizziness due to a liver deficiency. It is truly the medicine of the liver. Take in decocted form.
- Gleditsiae Fructus , the fructus of Japanese honey locust, Chinese honey locust 皂莢 It cures head wind and headaches. Grind and blow the powder into the nostrils. It can also be used to wash the hair for medical purposes.
- Theae Folium 茶 It refers to Jakseol Tea. It clears the head and the eyes. It is better to decoct in water for intake. Both the buds and leaves have the same effect.
- Schizonepetae Spica 荊芥 ① It is mainly used to treat vertigo and blurred vision. It is an important medicine that treats head wind. Decoct in water or grind into powder for intake, both are effective. ② It treats head wind. Grind equal amounts of Schizonepetae Spica (荊芥穗) and heated Gypsum Fibrosum (石膏) and add 2 don of the powder to the decoction of Zingiberis Rhizoma Crudus (生薑) and Welsh onion. This is called Schizonopeta Powder.
- Allii Fistulosi Bulbus 葱白
- Phaseoli Radiati Semen 菉豆 It treats head wind and headaches. It is effective to make a pillow out of this medicine.
- Raphani Radix 蘿葍 ① It treats migraines. Inhale its juice. ② When there is a headache due to inhaling charcoal smoke, take raw radish juice. When there is no raw radish, pound Raphani Radix (萊菔) softly, and drink the juice.
- Menthae Herba 薄荷 It treats head wind and also treats headaches due to Wind-Heat. It is an important medicine that clears the upper part of the body. It is effective in both decocted and powder forms.
- Bovis Cerebrum 黃牛腦髓 It treats migraines and overall headaches. Add 3 don of each of Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (白芷) and Cnidii Rhizoma (川芎) powder to Bovis Cerebrum (黃牛腦髓) in a porcelain pot. Steam thoroughly in alcohol and take while it’s still hot. The patient gets drunk after drinking the whole amount. Upon waking up from the alcohol, the patient will find himself/herself cured.
- Head of Otus scops Linnaeus 鴟頭 It is mainly used in fainting caused by head wind. Add ashes to alcohol for intake.
33 Acupuncture and Moxibustion 鍼灸法 침구법
① For dizziness, GV24 ‧ GV23 ‧ GV22 ‧ GV21 ‧ GV19 ‧ GB19 ‧ GB20 ‧ SI5 ‧ SP2 ‧ BL67 ‧ BL63 ‧ BL62 and ST-36 should be stimulated.
② When there is dizziness, the patient always wears a hat even during spring and summer because the patient is sensitive to cold. Should the patient take the hat off momentarily, the patient feels dizziness again. Stimulate GV20 ‧ GV23 ‧ GB20 and ST40.
③ When there is a migraine and overall headache, stimulate TE23 ‧ GB20 ‧ LI4 ‧ CV12 ‧ ST41 and ST36.
④ When there is an overall headache, stimulate GV20 ‧ GV23 ‧ GV24 ‧ Temple and LI4.
⑤ When there is a headache due to disorders of the kidneys, burn 100 moxa cones on CV4.
⑥ When there is a reversal headache, which accompanies a toothache, burn 7 moxa cones on GB-7.
⑦ When there is a headache due to adverse rising of phlegm, stimulate ST-40.
⑧ When there is a head Wind or headache, perform acupuncture on GV20. It will be cured immediately. Moxibustion on GV22 ‧ GV21 ‧ GV23 and GV20 is effective as well.
⑨ When there is violent pain in the head, vertigo, profuse rhinorrhea, brain fever, and brain cold, perform moxibustion on GV22.
⑩ If there is supraorbital pain, stimulate BL2 ‧ LI4 ‧ GV-24 ‧ ST-8 and ST-41.
⑪ Where there is a headache after drinking alcohol, stimulate yin Tang, BL2 ‧ ST36 ‧ BL12 and CV17.
⑫ An old woman suffered from headaches for a long time. Purplish-black vessels were observed on the hands and feet. She was completely cured after bloodletting of the black blood with a needle and acupuncture on the meridian responsible for the headaches.
⑬ When there are migraines and overall headaches, stimulate the pain point. It will be cured immediately.
