09 Floating Yang on the Face 面戴陽證 면대양증
① If the face is red due to several diseases, the body should not be attacked no matter how much Fire heat is hidden. This is yang qi concentrated in one area and pathogenic qi located in the meridians. The qi must be released to the exterior for the disease to be cured. It is said in the Classic (經), “the condensed Fire must be released.” These two imply the same: the same treatment can be applied to sores and ulcers.
② Floating yang on the face is Fire floating upward from inside the body. Also, when this symptom occurs, the patient lacks vitality even when the face is red. It is caused by a deficiency of the lower energizer. If the doctor misinterprets the symptoms and uses cold medicines, the qi becomes completely exhausted which progresses to a serious disease.
③ Redness in the face is caused by yang qi blocked from the outside. To relieve the symptom, perspiration should be induced.
④ The symptom of floating yang on the face in the lesser yin pattern of Cold Damage is caused by a deficiency of the lower energizer. A Unblock Pulse Four Counterflows Decoction must be used with 9 pieces of Allii Fistulosi Bulbus (葱白).
⑤ Redness in the face is caused by a blockage of yang qi from the outside. Therefore, Allii Fistulosi Bulbus (葱白) should be used to circulate yang qi.
10 Pathogenic Wind in the Stomach 胃風證 위풍증
① The symptom of pathogenic wind in the stomach is swelling of the face.
② Swelling of the face is called pathogenic wind.
③ The symptom starts when pathogenic wind or cold qi is caught after eating food. The symptoms are: inability to swallow food, getting thin, swelling of the abdomen, aversion to wind, sweating from the head, stuffiness in the chest, and a string-like, moderate and floating bar pulse of the right hand.
④ Deficient wind causes numbness, clenching of the teeth, and flickering of the eyes. If pathogenic wind invades the stomach, only the face swells. A Cimicifuga for Wind in Stomach Decoction should be prescribed.
⑤ A patient felt pain around the nose and temples which sometime changed to numbness. The pain arose from the areas in front of the ears and across ST6 and caused swelling of mouth and teeth; it seemed as if a thick paste covered the area that it felt stretched, and painful even to a slight touch. This is caused by the pathogenic qi of wind-heat in yang brightness; a Rhinocerotis Cornu and Cimicifuga Decoction must be prescribed.
- Cimicifuga for Wind in Stomach Decoction 升麻胃風湯 승마위풍탕 It treats swelling of the face due to pathogenic wind in the stomach. Prepare 2 dons of Cimicifugae Rhizoma (升麻), 1.2 don of Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (白芷), 1 don of Angelica Gigantis Radix (當歸), Puerariae Radix (葛根) and Atractylodis Rhizoma (蒼朮), 5 puns of Ephedrae Herba (麻黃) (with the joints not removed), 3 puns of Bupleuri Radix (柴胡), Angelicae Tenuissimae Radix (藁本), Osterici Radix (羌活), Phellodendri Cortex (黃柏), and Alpiniae Katsumadaii Semen (草豆蔲), and 2 puns of Viticis Fructus (蔓荊子). Cut these herbs in pieces, put them in one bag, and decoct with 3 pieces of ginger and 2 pieces of jujube. Take the medicine after meals.
- Rhinocerotis Cornu and Cimicifuga Decoction 犀角升麻湯 서각승마탕 It treats toxins in the yang brightness stomach meridian. Prepare 1.5 don of Rhinocertis Cornu (犀角), 1 don of Cimicifugae Rhizoma (升麻), Osterici Radix (羌活), and Saposhnikoviae Radix (防風), and 5 puns of Cnidii Rhizoma (川芎), Aconiti Koreani Tuber (白附子), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (白芷), Scutellariae Radix (黃芩) and Glycyrrhizae Radix (甘草). Cut these herbs in pieces, put them in one bag and decoct. Take the medicine after meals and before going to bed.
11 Kidney Wind Syndrome 腎風證 신풍증
① Huangdi (黃帝) asked, “When the patient’s face and the area under the eyes swell, and one is unable to speak, is it possible to apply acupuncture?” Qibo answered: “One must not apply acupuncture if the patient is deficient. If the doctor applies acupuncture even when he is not supposed to, pathogenic qi surely invades the patient’s body in five days. When the pathogenic qi invades the body, one feels weak and gets feverish from time to time. This fever starts from the chest and back and goes up to the head and induces sweating. The hands get hot and the patient’s mouth becomes dry with severe thirsty, urine becomes yellow, the area below the eyes gets puffy, the abdomen makes rumbling sounds and the body feels heavy which makes one feel difficult to walk.” It is said in the Annotation, “Mang-yun (痝然) refers to the swelling. Congestion (壅, Ong) refers to the swelling below the eyes as if there is a worm below the eye area.
② When the face swells and feels painful, with a darkened complexion, perspiration, and an aversion to wind, these are all symptoms of pathogenic wind in the kidneys. There is no treatment known for these symptoms.
12 Swelling of the Cheeks 搭顋腫 탑시종
① Swelling of the cheeks is also called the diseased cheeks. It is caused by wind-heat or by excess heat from overeating greasy and delicious food. A Cimicifuga and Coptis Decoction, Cimicifuga for Wind in Stomach Decoction, or Schizonopeta and Ledebourellia Defeat Toxin Powder-Ginseng Overcome Toxicity Powder should be prescribed. When the swelling does not heal for a long time and is about to become an abscess, an Internal Support Eliminate Toxicity Drink should be prescribed. If the cheeks, teeth, lips, and mouth all swell and bleed, Clear Stomach Powder with Gypsum Fibrosum (石膏) should be considered.
② For swelling of the cheeks, an Augmented Eliminate Toxicity Drink should be prescribed.
③ For swelling of the cheeks, make paste with the powder of red beans mixed with the white of an egg. It is still effective to mix the powder with vinegar.
④ Also, heat a lime and bury it in the earth and take it out seven times. Mix it in vinegar and apply it on the diseased part and the sick area will be healed instantly.
⑤ Another prescription is using the same amounts of Asiasari Radix et Rhizoma (細辛) and Aconiti Ciliare Tuber (草烏). Grind into powder, add Anadontae Concha Pulvis (蚌粉), mix the medicines together in pig oil and paste it on the swollen area. At the same time, hold Mume Fructus Praeparatum Alba (白梅) in mouth for a long time; the swelling will be healed, and with the secretion of saliva, the disease will be cured.
⑥ When the pathgenic qi invades a child’s cheeks, they get red and swollen, so treatment should be very cautious. Prepare 2 nyang of Gleditsiae Spina (皂角), 2 dons of Arisaematis Rhizoma (南星) (a live one), and 1 hop of glutinous rice; grind them into powder, mix the herbs in ginger juice. Paste it on the diseased parts and the sickness will be healed soon.
- Augmented Eliminate Toxicity Drink 加味消毒飮 가미소독음: ① It treats swelling of the cheek. Prepare 1 don each of Schizonepetae Spica (荊芥), Saposhnikoviae Radix (防風), Arctii Semen (牛蒡子), Glycyrrhizae Radix (甘草), Forsythiae Fructus (連翹) and Osterici Radix (羌活). Cut these herbs into pieces, put them in one bag and decoct in water. ② In the Medical Mirror of Past and Present (醫鑑), it was also called Powder to Expel Wind and Resolve Toxicity-Augmented Eliminate Toxicity Powder. ③ A patient had the following symptoms: one side of the head, neck, and eyes were swollen which looked like one side of a pot, and the pulse was surging and large. A wise man said, “In the Inner Classic (內經), it says ‘the swelling of the face is called the wind symptom.’ It is referring to the symptom of the pathogenic wind invading the yang brightness meridian. When both qi and blood are abundant and swelling occurs, the treatment is based on promoting perspiration.” Prescribe Ledebouriella Sagely Unblocking Powder with the removal of Natrii Sulfas (芒硝) and Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (大黃), and add Zingiberis Rhizoma Crudus (生薑), green onion, and Glycine Semen Preparatum (豆豉) instead, and decoct. The promotion of sweating with this medicine and poking the inside of the nose with a leaf induce a nose-bleed. After this treatment, the swelling went down in a short time.
13 Miscellaneous Diseases of the Face 面上雜病 얼굴의 잡다한 병
① Pimples, acne, freckles, rash, heat rash, rosasea, and red nose are all diseases on the face.
② If pathogenic qi invades the skin, or if phlegm seeps through the viscera and bowels, freckles appear on the face. If pathogenic wind-dampness invades the spleen and lungs which cause heat, a red-purplish rash or swelling appears on the face. Prescriptions based on a Cimicifuga for Wind in Stomach Decoction should be used.
③ If sores or rosasea occur on the face due to a heat toxin, Phellodendron and Coptis Powder, Sulphur Paste, Typhonium Powder or Clear the Upper Ledebourellia Decoction should be prescribed.
④ All kinds of pimples, acne, freckles, and black warts on the face are treated with Beautiful Powder, Forsythia Powder, Red Jade Powder, Jade Face Xishi Powder or Imperial Lotion for a Shiny Face Prescription or Beautiful Paste.
⑤ The treatment of removing scars on the face is as follows: prepare 21 moths, 3.5 dons of Halloysitum Album (白石脂), 7.5 dons of white feces of a hawk, 2.5 dons of Aconiti Koreani Tuber (白附子), and 5 dons of Batryticatus Bombyx (白殭蠶). Mix these herbs in pig oil, spread it on the scar every night and wash it off in the morning.
- Phellodendron and Coptis Powder 柏連散 백련산 It treats malignant furuncles due to heat toxins. Prepare the same amounts of Phellodendri Cortex (黃柏) (roasted), Coptidis Rhizoma (黃連), and Hydrocerussitum (胡粉) (stir-fried). Grind these herbs into fine powder, mix in pig oil, and paste on the sore frequently.
- Sulphur Paste 硫黃膏 유황고 It treats rashes on the face, red-purple color on the nose or cheeks, pimples, or acne when other medicines show no effect. Prepare 0.5 don of Sulfur (硫黃) (in raw form), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (白芷), Trichosanthis Radix (天花粉), and Calomelas (輕粉), 3 Scorpio (全蝎), 5 Cicadidae Periostracum (蟬退) and 7 Green Spanish Flies (芫靑) (the wings and legs removed). Grind these herbs into powder. Mix sesame oil and honey thoroughly as if making cosmetic cream, melt the mixture in fire and collect the dripped liquid. Add the powder into this mixture and mix well. Use it well and paste the mixture before going to sleep after washing the face. Put it on the face thoroughly except for the area around the eyes, and the redness on the face will be removed in a few days. Even the pimples and acne should be affected in one night.
- Typhonium Powder 白附子散 백부자산 It treats sores or spots due to heat in the face. Prepare the same amounts of Aconiti Koreani Tuber (白附子), Lithargyrum (密佗僧), Poria Sclerotium (白茯苓), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (白芷) and Hydrocerussitum (鉛粉). Grind these herbs into powder, mix them in sheep milk and make into ointment. Wash the face with water decocted with white radish, paste the ointment on the area and wash it off the next morning. If there is no sheep milk available, use the milk of a human instead.
- Clear the Upper Ledebourellia Decoction 淸上防風湯 청상방풍탕 It cools off the Fire in the upper energizer and thereby treats sores and furuncles on the head or wind-heat toxins. Prepare 1 don of Saposhnikoviae Radix (防風), 8 puns of Forsythiae Fructus (連翹), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (白芷), and Platycodonis Radix (桔梗), 7 puns of Scutellariae Radix (黃芩) (thick and brittle roots that has been soaked in alcohol and stir-fried) and Cnidii Rhizoma (川芎), 5 puns of Schizonepetae Spica (荊芥), Gardeniae Fructus (梔子), Coptidis Rhizoma (黃連), Aruantii Fructus Immaturus (枳殼), and Menthae Herba (薄荷) and 3 puns of Glycyrrhizae Radix (甘草). Cut these herbs into pieces, put them in one bag and decoct in water. When taking this medicine, add 5 spoonfuls of Bambusae Caulis in Liquamen (竹瀝).
- Beautiful Powder 玉容散 옥용산 It treats freckles on the face, small rashes, zits, heat rash, acne, and itching face. It also removes greasy dirt on the face. Prepare 1 geun of Gleditsiae Spina (皂角), 2.65 nyang of Cimicifugae Rhizoma (升麻), 1.6 nyang of Broussonetiae Fructus (楮實子), 3.35 dons each of Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (白芷), Bletillae Rhizoma (白芨), and Trichosanthis Radix (天花粉), and the powder of Phaseoli Radiati Semen (菉豆). Grind these herbs into powder, mix thoroughly and wash face with this powder all the time. 2 dons of Camphorum (樟腦) may be added.
- Forsythia Powder 連翹散 연교산 ① It treats grain-tip sores on the face. Grain-tip sores are referred to as among the common people as acne (Boongashi in Korean). Prepare 7 pun of Forsythiae Fructus (連翹), Cnidii Rhizoma (川芎), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (白芷), Scutellariae Radix (黃芩) (thick and brisky roots), Coptidis Rhizoma (黃連), Adenophorae Radix (沙參), Schizonepetae Spica (荊芥), Mori Cortex (桑白皮), Gardeniae Fructus (梔子), Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae (貝母) and Glycyrrhizae Radix (甘草). Cut these herbs in pieces, put in one bag, decoct in water and take after meals. ② It is also called Clear Lungs Powder.
- Red Jade Powder 紅玉散 홍옥산 It treats all kinds of acne, pimples and black purpura. Prepare 2 don of Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (白芷), Agastachis Herba (藿香), and Gleditsiae Spina (猪牙皂角), 1 don of Kaempferiae Rhizoma (三柰子), Moktaek (木澤), Passeris Mas Excrementum (白丁香), Asiasari Radix et Rhizoma (細辛), Armeniacae Semen (杏仁), and Lithargyrum (密佗僧), 1.5 don of Trichosanthis Radix (天花粉) and Poria Sclerotium (白茯苓), 5 puns of Camphorum (樟腦), and 3 pun of Bletillae Rhizoma (白芨). Grind these into powder, and mix them in saliva or milk and apply on the face before going to bed. Wash it in the next morning with warm water, and the face will become as smooth as jade.
- Jade Face Xishi Powder 玉容西施散 옥용서시산 It treats the same symptoms as above. Prepare 2 nyang of powdered Phaseoli Radiati Semen (菉豆), 1 nyang of Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (白芷), Batryticatus Bombyx (白殭蠶), Aconiti Koreani Tuber (白附子), and Trichosanthis Radix (天花粉), 5 don of Nardostachyos Rhizoma (甘松), Kaempferiae Rhizoma (三柰子), and Cymbopogonis Citrati Herba (茅香), 2 don of Lysimachiae Foenum-Graeci Herba (零陵香), Saposhnikoviae Radix (防風), and Angelicae Tenuissimae Radix (藁本), and pieces of Gleditsiae Spina (皂角) (ones with much flesh). Grind these into powder and use it while washing the face, and the face will be as smooth as jade.
- Imperial Lotion for a Shiny Face Prescription 皇帝塗容金面方 황제도용금면방 Prepare 2 don of Cinnabaris (朱砂), 1 don of dry Carthami Flos (胭脂), 3 don of Hydrocerussitum (鉛粉), 5 Mume Fructus Praeparatum (烏梅肉), 5 don of Camphora (小腦), and a small amount of Cnidii Rhizoma (川芎). Grind these into powder, mix in saliva before going to sleep and put on the face. Wash the face with warm water the next morning and the face will be as soft as that of a child. This is a mysterious method of a hermit in the mountains.
- Beautiful Paste 玉容膏 옥용고 It treats dry face and rashes, spots, warts, and all kinds of zits.
- Another Prescription 又方 또 다른 처방 ① It treats acne. Prepare 1 nyang of Alumen (白礬), and 2 don of Sulfur (硫黃) (raw) and Aconiti Koreani Tuber (白附子). Grind these into powder, mix in saliva, put on the face before going to bed and wash off the next morning. ② It treats acne and a red nose. Prepare 1 don each of Realgar (雄黃) and Hydrocerussitum (鉛粉), and 5 pun of Sulfur (硫黃). Grind these into powder, mix in milk, put on the face before going to bed and wash off with warm water the next morning.
14 Methods for Massage 按摩法 안마법
Rubbing both hands until they are heated and rubbing the forehead often is called ‘rubbing the heavenly ceiling’. Rub the forehead up to the hairline fourteen to twenty-one times, and the face will shine on its own. The phrase ‘hands must be on the face’ refers to this.
15 Unfavorable Symptoms on the Face 面部凶證 얼굴의 좋지 않은 증상
① If the patient’s face is grey and the teeth gums are black, it implies death.
② A swollen face and dark blue complexion implies death.
③ If the nutrients and blood and defense qi are exhausted and the face swells, it implies death.
④ If the face swells and the complexion becomes dark blue, it implies death.
⑤ If the face is black and the lips are blue, it implies death. If the face is blue and lips are black, it also implies death.
⑥ If the forehead and the area above the forehead are black, it implies death.
⑦ If a man is ill and with red spots appearing on the face, it usually means death.
