23 Simple Prescriptions 單方단방
There are 48 kinds in total. There are also Penetrate the Diaphragm Powder and Achyranthes Paste.
∙ Talcum 滑石: ① Opens the orifices to ease urination. It is a very dry medicine. ② Eases urination. To treat strangury, using only Talcum (滑石) is frequently prescribed. This is called Augment Base Powder. [The prescription is seen in the chapter on Summer-heat].
∙ Mirabilitum 朴硝: Used for the five strangury diseases and dysuria. Grind a snow-white one into fine powder and take each 2 don. Take it with Malvae Semen (冬葵子)-steeped water for consumptive strangury; take with cold water for blood and heat strangury; take with Akebiae Caulis (木通)-steeped water for qi strangury; take with warm water mixed with Mirabilitum (朴硝) (硝石) roasted on a paper for stone strangury. Take it with flour-steeped water for dysuria. All are taken on an empty stomach and are called Penetrate the Diaphragm Powder. Even if all others are not efficacious, this will prove to be effective.
∙ Lygodii Spora 海金沙: Opens the small intestine, cures sandy strangury, and blockage of urine. Mix each 1 nyang with Jakseol tea (Sparrow’s Tongue Tea) powder 5 don, mix each 3 don with water steeped with Zingiberis Rhizoma (生薑) and Glycyrrhizae Radix (甘草).
∙ Pumex 浮石: Treats difficult and painful urination caused by sandy strangury. Grind it into powder, mix each 2 don with Glycyrrhizae Radix (甘草)-steeped water, and take on an empty stomach.
∙ Urinary Calculus 淋石: Small stones in the urine of patients suffering from stone strangury are used for treating stone strangury. When taken ground in water, one may urinate with stones broken. Take the stones out of the urine and use.
∙ Glycyrrhizae Radicii Virgula 甘草梢: ① Ones with the bland taste are mostly used for stabbing pain inside the penis. Steep with Akebiae Caulis (木通) and take it on an empty stomach. ② Used for irregular pain in the urethra. Use ones with a bland and unsweet taste.
∙ Tokoro Rhizoma 萆薢: Used for heavy urination during night or enuresis. It also cures frequent urination both day and night. Chop, steep with water, and take it. Or grind into powder, make it into pills with starch cooked with wine, and take 70 pills with boiled salted water on an empty stomach.
∙ Achyranthis Radix 牛膝: ① Used for enuresis for the elderly. ② Steep with wine and take it on an empty stomach for difficult urination and severe pain inside the penis. ③ Achyranthis Radix (牛膝) ointment is the most efficacious for strangury caused by static blood. Chop Achyranthis Radix (牛膝) 1 nyang, steep until 5 glasses of water remain 1, add a little Moschus (麝香), and take on an empty stomach. Achyranthis Radix (牛膝) is a superb medicine for strangury.
∙ Plantaginis Herba 車前草: ① Eases difficult urination caused by the five strangury diseases, uroschesis, and ischuria. Squeeze the juice from the roots and leaves of this herb and mix 1 glass of it with 1 spoon of honey. ② Squeeze the juice, mix it with Glauberite (寒水石) powder for sandy, and stone strangury, while just squeeze the juice and take it on an empty stomach for blood strangury. The roots and the leaves of Glauberite (寒水石) have the same efficacy. Both steeping or grinding into powder are efficacious.
∙ Alismatis Rhizoma 澤瀉: ① Used for the five strangury diseases and difficult and dribbling urination. ② Removes the dirt inside the urinary bladder and stops the dribbling of urination. The salty taste can make the hidden water come out, removing the accumulated old debris inside the urinary bladder. Both steeping and grinding into powder are efficacious.
∙ Kochia Scoparia Schrad. 地膚草: ① Eases urination and is mainly used for dysuria. Taking the juice makes urine come out soon and has the efficacy to revive even a dead person. ② The seed has the same efficacy as the stems or leaves. Steep with water and take it.
∙ Akebiae Caulis 木通: ① Used for the five strangury diseases and opens the uroschesis and ischuria. Also, mainly used for frequent and suddenly painful urination. Chop, steep, and take it on an empty stomach. ② The efficacy of it is the same as that of Tetrapanacis Medulla (通草).
∙ Dianthi Herba 瞿麥: ① Used for the five strangury diseases or various uroschesis and ischuria. Steep with water and take it. ② To treat stone strangury, grind the seeds into powder, mix each 1 don with wine, and take it; this will cause the stones to come out.
∙ Scutellariae Radix 黃芩: Used for the five stranguries and also cures heat and blood strangury. Steep with water and take it.
∙ Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus 益智仁: Used for frequent urination and enuresis. Steep with salted water and take it. Or taking it as pills is also recommended.
∙ Physalis Alkekengi Herba 酸漿草: Used for difficult and painful urination caused by various strangury. Also eases urination. It may be opened soon by pounding to squeeze the juice, mixing 1 hop with 1 hop of wine, and taking it on an empty stomach.
∙ Pyrrosiae Folium 石韋: Used for the five stranguries, uroschesis, and ischuria. Also cures dysuria caused by the stagnation of heat in the urinary bladder. Eases urination. Steep with water and take it.
∙ Pharbitidis Semen 牽牛子: Mainly used for uroschesis, ischuria, and dysuria and eases urination. Grind into powder, sift, mix the first coming powder 2 don with water steeped with Akebiae Caulis (木通) and Gardeniae Fructus (梔子) and take it.
∙ Junci Medulla 燈心草: Mainly used for the five stranguries and eases urination. Steep with water and take it on an empty stomach.
∙ Polygoni Avicularis Herb 萹蓄: Used for the five stranguries and dysuria. It grows near the edge of the water and blooms a purple flower. Urine may come out soon by pounding the root of Polygoni Avicularis Herba (萹蓄), squeezing the juice, and taking 1 glass of it on an empty stomach.
∙ Humuli Herba 葎草: ① Mainly used for the five stranguries and eases urination. Pound, squeeze the juice, and take it or steep with water and take it. ② Unctuous strangury can be cured by mixing 2 doe of juice with 2 hop of vinegar and taking each 1 glass on an empty stomach.
∙ Hemerocallidis Radix 萱草根: Used for difficult and painful urination. Eases sand or stone strangury. Pound the root, squeeze the juice, and take it on an empty stomach.
∙ Ulmi Cortex 楡白皮: Used for the five stranguries, especially for stone strangury. Steep with water and take it on an empty stomach. Its nature is smooth to ease urination.
∙ Poria Sclerotium 茯苓: Used for the five stranguries, especially for dysuria and eases urination. Whether steeping or grinding it, it is efficacious.
∙ Succinum 琥珀: Frees the five kinds of strangury, treats various stone and sand stranguries and eases urination. Grind, mix each 2 don with Allii Fistulosi Bulbus (葱白)-steeped water, and take it on an empty stomach. Taking it once may be soon efficacious.
∙ Polygoni Cuspidati Radix 虎杖根: Frees the five kinds of strangury and eases urination. Slicing, steeping 1 nyang with water, mixing Moschus (麝香) and Olibanum (乳香) powder a little, and taking it on an empty stomach will have an immediate effect. Among laymen, it is called Duwooseul (Polygoni Cuspidati Radix, 杜牛膝).
∙ Gardeniae Fructus 梔子: ① Frees the five kinds of strangury and eases urination. Also, used for difficult urination caused by the stagnation of blood. It is efficacious especially for heat and blood strangury. ② Gardeniae Fructus (梔子) does not ease urination actually but cools the lungs. As lung qi becomes clear, the bladder receives and transforms it, then urine comes out.
∙ Polyporus 猪苓: ① Eases urination and opens waterways. Chop, steep, and take it. ② Five Ingredients Powder with Poria involves Polyporus (猪苓) making urine come out. Among the many decoctions of medical ingredients, there is nothing which has faster efficacy than Five Ingredients Powder with Poria.
∙ Corni Fructus 山茱萸: Stops frequent urination and used for the abnormal urinaiton of the elderly. Steeping it or making it into pills may be good.
∙ Mantidis Oőtheca 桑螵蛸: Stops frequent urination, and is used for enuresis and turbid urination. Steaming this with wine, grinding into powder, and taking it with Zingiberis Rhizoma (生薑)-steeped water may have curious efficacy.
∙ Ostreae Concha 牡蠣粉: Stops heavy urination. Make this into pills or grind this.
∙ Sciaenae Otolithum 石首魚頭中骨: Mainly used for stone strangury. Heat this in the fire, grind into powder, mix with water, and take each 2 don on an empty stomach.
∙ Eumeces 石龍子: Mainly used for five kinds of strangury, eases urination, and sends stone strangury down. Roast 1 head over the fire, grind into powder, mix with water, and take it on an empty stomach.
∙ Juice of Lumbricus 蚯蚓汁: Used for dysuria. Taking half of bowl on an empty stomach makes urine come out.
∙ Gryllotalpae Corpus 螻蛄: ① Sends stone strangury down and eases urination. Catch seven of them, break them on a new tile with 2 nyang salt, dry them over the fire, and grind into powder. One may be soon cured by mixing 1 don with warm wine and taking it. ② Used for dysuria. When there is no more efficacious medicine, catch 1 head alive, grind this alive, and mix Moschus (麝香) a little. Mixing this with newly-drawn water and taking it on an empty stomach makes urine come out soon.
∙ Resina Amygdali 桃膠: Breaks stone strangury. Take a bit as big as a seed of Zizyphi Fructus (大棗), melt it in cold water at summer, and in warm water at winter, and take it 3 times on an empty stomach. Then, the stone may descend.
∙ Fruit of Actinidia arguta 獼猴桃: ① Sends stone strangury down. Pick the ripe one and take it. ② The juice inside a vine is so slippery that it sends stone strangury down. Squeeze the juice, mix this with some Zingiberis Rhizoma (生薑) juice and take it.
∙ Malvae Semen 冬葵子: ① Used for the five kinds of strangury and eases urination. ② The root also treats strangury and eases urination. Steep all with water and take it on an empty stomach.
∙ Benincasae Semen 冬瓜: Used for the five kinds of strangury and eases urination. Squeeze it into juice and take each 1 glass.
∙ Althaeae Radix 紅蜀葵根莖: Used for strangury and eases urination. The flower has the same efficacy as the seed. Steep this with water and take it.
∙ Carbonisatus Crinis 亂髮灰: ① Mainly used for the five kinds of strangury and treats dysuria caused by a shifted bladder. Mix Carbonisatus Crinis powder 2 don with vinegar-added water and take it. ② Mix Carbonisatus Crinis (亂髮灰) 2 don with water steeped with Imperatae Rhizoma (白茅根) and Plantaginis Herba (車前草), and take it for blood strangury. ③ Carbonisatus Crinis has a fast efficacy to support yin.
∙ Unguis Hominis 人爪甲: Used for blockage of urine caused by a shifted bladder. Burn the patient’s nails, mix the ash with water, and take it.
∙ Suilus Fel 猪膽: ① Used for difficulty in urination. Mix this with hot wine and take it. ② For blockage or difficulty in urination, cover the tip of one’s penis with the raw gallbladder of a pig for a while. Then, the juice permeates to make urine come out by itself. For a woman, drop the juice into the vulva to make the urine come out.
∙ Suis Vesica 猪脬: Used for enuresis. Wash, bake, and take it with warm wine on an empty stomach.
∙ Ovis stomachus 羊肚: ① Used for frequent urination. Boil the fatty stomach of a sheep and take it. ② Treats enuresis. Fill the stomach of a sheep with water, bind both sides with a string, boil it well, and take it once. Then, one may be cured.
∙ Bovis Urina 牛尿: Eases urination and treats dysuria. Get warm urine of male cows and take it.
∙ Galli Intestinum 雞腸: ① Mainly used for enuresis and incontinence of urine. Cook the internal organs of a male black-boned chicken, boil, mix well with warm wine, and take it. ② Or burn it, grind into powder, and mix each 1 don with wine. Then, it will be effective.
∙ A yellow membrane in a sand pouch of a male chicken 雄雞肶胵裏黃皮: Mainly used for enuresis or frequent urination. Also cures incontinence of urine. Burn, mix 2 don of ashes with warm wine, and take it. Use the female one for men and the male one for women. Burning this with the internal organs would be better.
24 Acupuncture and Moxibustion 鍼灸法 침구법
① Use the yin heel vessel [namely, KI6], LR1, BL39, KI4, LR2, BL40, SP9, and CV5 for uroschesis and ischuria.
② Use CV4[8 pun], SP6 [3 pun would be enough to open up.], KI10, SP9, CV6, KI3, and CV7 for dribbling and blockage of urination.
③ Use CV4, LR14, and LR1 for stone strangury.
④ Use CV6 and CV4 for blood strangury.
⑤ Use SP9, CV4 and ST30 for heat strangury.
⑥ Use CV3[Burn moxa], BL23, SP9, CV6, KI10, and SP6 for frequent urination.
⑦ Use SP9, GB34, LR1, and CV2 for enuresis and incontinence of urine.
⑧ Use LR2 [Burn 30 moxa] or CV3, KI3, SP6, and KI7 for pain inside the penis.
⑨ Use BL23 [Burn moxa] or LR13, LR8, CV4, and SP6 for turbid urine.
⑩ Use CV2 and CV4 for difficult urination caused by the shifted urinary bladder in a woman. ⑪ Use SP9 for pain inside the genitalis.
