09 Fuzziness in the Head and Eyes 頭目不淸利 머리와 눈이 맑지 않은 것
The head and the eyes are fuzzy because congested liquids are concentrated in the head due to Wind, Dampness, and Heat. Use a Chuanxiong Pill, Ledebouriella Powder, Chuanxiong Powder, Rich Snow Decoction, Clear Spirit and Nurture the Nutrient Qi Decoction.
• Chuanxiong Pill 川芎丸 천궁환: It clears the head and eyes, stops dizziness, and dissipates wind-phlegm. Platycodonis Radix (桔梗) 5 nyang, Cnidii Rhizoma (川芎), Menthae Herba (薄荷) 3.25 nyang each, and Asiasari Radix et Rhizoma (細辛), Saposhnikoviae Radix (防風), Glycyrrhizae Radix (甘草) 1.25 nyang each. Grind these drugs, knead in honey, and make 5 pills 1.5 nyang each and take one pill at a time with cold water.
• Ledebouriella Powder 防風散 방풍산: It treats fuzziness in the head and the eyes. It removes Wind and clarifies the eyes. Saposhnikoviae Radix (防風), Cnidii Rhizoma (川芎), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (白芷), Chrysanthemi Flos (甘菊花), Glycyrrhizae Radix (甘草) 1 nyang each. Grind these drugs and add to tea 2 don at a time to drink.
• Clear Spirit and Nurture the Nutrient Qi Decoction 淸神養榮湯 청신양영탕: It clears the head, eyes, ears, and helps the mind. Liriopis Tuber (麥門冬), Angelica Gigantis Radix (當歸) 1.2 don each, Cnidii Rhizoma (川芎) 1 don, Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (白芷) 7 pun, Menthae Herba (薄荷), Chrysanthemi Flos (甘菊花), Osterici Radix (羌活), Gardeniae Fructus (梔子) 5 pun each, Glycyrrhizae Radix (甘草) 4 pun, and Cimicifugae Rhizoma (升麻) 2 pun. Slice these drugs to make 1 package, add 3 slices of Zingiberis Rhizoma Crudus (生薑) and one handful of tea and decoct.
• Rich Snow Decoction 沃雪湯 옥설탕: It treats faintness and dizziness in the head and eyes, an unclear mind and dry throat, and a stuffy nose. Menthae Folium (薄荷葉) 3 nyang, Glycyrrhizae Radix (甘草) 1.4 nyang, Schizonepetae Spica (荊芥穗), salt 1.2 nyang each, Trichosanthis Radix (天花粉) 2.7 don, and Amomi Fructus (砂仁) 1 don. Grind these drugs and add to water 1 don at a time to drink.
• Chuanxiong Powder 川芎散 천궁산: It treats fuzziness in the head and eyes. Coptidis Rhizoma (黃連) (soaked in alcohol and roasted), Scutellariae Radix (黃芩) (thick ones with soft insides; soaked in alcohol and roasted) 1 nyang each, Rehmanniae Radix Crudus (生地黃), Glycyrrhizae Radix (甘草) (baked) 7.5 don each, Osterici Radix (羌活), Saposhnikoviae Radix (防風), Angelicae Tenuissimae Radix (藁本), Cimicifugae Rhizoma (升麻), Glycyrrhizae Radix (甘草) (raw) 5 don each, Bupleuri Radix (柴胡) 3.5 don, and Cnidii Rhizoma (川芎) 2.5 don. Grind these drugs and add to tea 2 don at a time and take after meals.
10 Overall Headache 正頭痛 정두통
① The three yang meridians flow from the hands to the head, and the three yang meridians of the feet flow from the head to the feet. Thus, all six yang meridians flow into the head and the face.
② A headache is a symptom of a disease in the three yang, but not the three yin. Only the reverting yin, because it meets with the Governor Vessel, causes headaches. Headaches can be observed in the case of lesser yin, but it is very rare.
③ Headaches mostly come from phlegm. Severe pain is due to excessive Fire. For treatment, one can either use the emetic or purgation therapy. Headaches also occur when qi is stagnant in various meridians and collaterals.
④ Headaches accompanied by pain in the eyes are due to uprising wind-phlegm. Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (白芷) must be used to dissipate the wind-phlegm.
⑤ For treatment of headaches, Chuanxiong and Tea Regulating Powder, Single Word Light Metal Powder, Holy Effect Biscuit, Seven Fresh Substances Pill must be used.
⑥ Cnidii Rhizoma (川芎) must be used for headaches. When it does not cure, add medicines that enter the corresponding meridians. For greater yang, Osterici Radix (羌活); for yang brightness Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (白芷); for lesser yang, Bupleuri Radix (柴胡); for greater yin, Atractylodis Rhizoma (蒼朮); for lesser yin, Asiasari Radix et Rhizoma (細辛); for reverting yin, Evodiae Fructus (吳茱萸).
⑦ Different kinds of headaches include: overall headaches, migraines, headaches due to Wind-Cold, Dampness-heat headaches, reversal headaches, headaches due to adverse rising of phlegm, headaches due to excessive Heat, Damp headaches, headaches due to regurgitation of vital energy, true headaches, and post alcohol consumption headaches.
⑧ For headaches in women, one should prescribe a Maintain Blood and Disperse Wind Decoction or Four Spirits Powder.
⑨ Also, Brain-Wind, a syndrome caused by a Wind pathogenic factor attacking the head, is explained later.
⑩ Headaches occurs in people who have smelled coal.
⑪ The bladder meridian runs to the forehead and intersects at the crown of the head. It enters the inside, connects to the brain, and divides to run down the nape. If this area is diseased, the qi rises upward and causes headaches, feeling as if the eyeballs are being pulled out of their sockets, and a similar sensation in the nape. This is the overall headache.
• Chuanxiong and Tea Regulating Powder 川芎茶調散 천궁다조산: ① It treats migraines ‧ overall headaches ‧ and stuffy nose and coarse voice due to head wind. Menthae Herba (薄荷) 2 nyang, Cnidii Rhizoma (川芎), Schizonepetae Spica (荊芥穗) 1 nyang each, Osterici Radix (羌活), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (白芷), Glycyrrhizae Radix (甘草) 5 don each, and Saposhnikoviae Radix (防風), Asiasari Radix et Rhizoma (細辛) 2.5 don each. Grind these drugs and add to tea 2 don at a time and drink after meals. It is also effective to make 7 don packages and decoct with tea. ② For migraines, grind and dilute in Allii Fistulosi Bulbus (葱白) juice and apply on to the EX-HN5 (acupoint) on both sides for miraculous effects.
• Single Word Light Metal Powder 一字輕金散 일자경금산: It treats migraines ‧ overall headaches ‧ head wind accompanied by Brain-Wind (腦風) that cause pain in the eyebrow bone, tension and pain in the eyes, or the inability to perceive properly due to cornea and conjunctiva. Cnidii Rhizoma (川芎), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (白芷), Agastachis Herba (藿香), Schizonepetae Spica (荊芥), Inulae Flos (旋覆花), Gypsum Fibrosum (石膏), Saposhnikoviae Radix (防風) 5 don each, Arisaematis Rhizoma (南星), Aconiti Tuber (川烏) (raw) 2.5 don each, and Aconiti Ciliare Tuber (草烏) 1.5 don. Slice these drugs, dry in the sun, powder, and add to tea 1.5 pun at a time for miraculous effects.
• Holy Effect Biscuit 如聖餠子 여성병자: It treats Wind-Cold incubated in the yang meridians (陽經) and headaches due to fainting caused by the disorder of qi and phlegm syncope. Arisaematis Rhizoma (南星), Zingiberis Rhizoma (乾薑), Cnidii Rhizoma (川芎), Aconiti Tuber (川烏), Glycyrrhizae Radix (甘草) 1 nyang each, Saposhnikoviae Radix (防風), Pinelliae Tuber (半夏) (processed), Gastrodiae Rhizoma (天麻), Asiasari Radix et Rhizoma (細辛) 5 don each. Grind these drugs and knead in flour paste mixed with Zingiberis Rhizoma Crudus (生薑) juice and make into pills the size of Euryales Semen (芡實), press it to make it resemble rice cakes, and eat 5 at a time with tea or warm alcohol.
• Seven Fresh Substances Pill 七生丸 칠생환: It treats the 8 kinds of head wind in both men and women. It also treats headache, phlegm syncope, kidney disorder, Cold Damage, Wind Damage headaches. Equal amounts of Cnidii Rhizoma (川芎), Aconiti Tuber (川烏), Aconiti Ciliare Tuber (草烏), Arisaematis Rhizoma (南星) and Pinelliae Tuber (半夏) (all cleansed in cold water to remove the slime), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (白芷) and Gypsum Fibrosum (石膏) (both raw). Asiasari Radix et Rhizoma (細辛) and Scorpio (全蝎) (half the amount of the above mentioned drugs). Grind these drugs, knead in garlic chive juice, and make into pills the size of the seeds of the royal foxglove tree. Take 7 to 9 pills at a time after chewing on a raw welsh onion.
• Four Spirits Powder 四神散 사신산: It treats dizziness and headaches in women due to blood Wind. Equal amounts of Chrysanthemi Flos (甘菊花), Angelica Gigantis Radix (當歸), Inulae Flos (旋覆花) and Schizonepetae Spica (荊芥穗). Grind these drugs 2 don at a time, add 3 chon of Allii Fistulosi Bulbus (葱白) and add to brew of 1 don of tea powder.
11 Migraine 偏頭痛 편두통
① Migraines are pain in one side of the head.
② A migraine is accompanied by chills and pain on one side of the head.
③ If the migraine is on the right side, it is phelgm or heat. If it is phlegm, use Atractylodis Rhizoma (蒼朮), Pinelliae Tuber (半夏), if it is heat, use Scutellariae Radix (黃芩) (Thick and fragile soft on the inside; processed with alcohol). If the migraine is on the left side, it is a Wind or blood deficiency. If it is Wind, use Schizonepetae Spica (荊芥), Menthae Herba (薄荷), and if is a blood deficiency, use Cnidii Rhizoma (川芎), Angelica Gigantis Radix (當歸), Paeoniae Radix (芍藥), Phellodendri Cortex (黃柏) (processed with alcohol).
④ When the migraine is on the right side, use a Syzygii Flos Relieve Stomach Decoction with Cnidii Rhizoma (川芎), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (白芷), Saposhnikoviae Radix (防風), Schizonepetae Spica (荊芥), Menthae Herba (薄荷), Cimicifugae Rhizoma (升麻), and when it is on the left side, combine a Syzygii Flos Relieve Stomach Decoction with a Four Substances Decoction and add Saposhnikoviae Radix (防風), Schizonepetae Spica (荊芥), Menthae Herba (薄荷), Asiasari Radix et Rhizoma (細辛), Viticis Fructus (蔓荊子), Bupleuri Radix (柴胡), Scutellariae Radix (黃芩) (processed with alcohol).
⑤ When severe head wind becomes chronic, the eyes become faint. Because migraines belong to lesser yang ministerial Fire, the eye system (目系) shrinks and constipation occurs when chronic. Use a bloodletting method and induce massive diarrhea.
⑥ Constipation, bloodshot eyes and dizziness due to chronic migraines are symptoms of qi stagnation and a blood abscess (血壅) due to the lungs suppressing the liver. Induce diarrhea with a Great qi Coordinating Decoction. Dilute Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (大黃) and Natrii Sulfas (芒硝) powder in mud from the bottom of a well and apply onto the EX-HN5 (acupoint). Then it will be cured shortly.
⑦ For migraines, Chuanxiong and Tea Regulating Powder, Single Word Light Metal Powder, Chuanxiong Powder, Chuanxiong and Rhinocerotis Cornu Formula and External Treatment on the Nose ought to be used.
⑧ The gall bladder meridian starts at the outside corners of the eyes (目銳眥) and runs up to the corners of the forehead (頭角). If this area is diseased, there is pain in the corners and the center of the forehead. This is a migraine.
• Chuanxiong Powder 川芎散 천궁산: It has miraculous effects on migraines. Chrysanthemi Flos (甘菊花), Gypsum Fibrosum (石膏), Cnidii Rhizoma (川芎), Batryticatus Bombyx (白殭蠶) (raw) 6 don each. Grind these drugs and add to tea 3 don at a time to drink.
• Chuanxiong and Rhinocerotis Cornu Formula 芎犀元 궁서원: ① It treats migraines. Cnidii Rhizoma (川芎), Gypsum Fibrosum (石膏) 1 nyang each, Ginseng Radix (人參), Poria Sclerotium Rubra (赤茯苓), Asiasari Radix et Rhizoma (細辛), Glycyrrhizae Radix (甘草) 5 don each, Liriopis Tuber (麥門冬) 7.5 don, Asini Corii Colla (阿膠珠) 4 don, Gardeniae Fructus (梔子仁), Borneolum (龍腦), Rhinocertis Cornu (犀角) 2.5 don each, and Cinnabaris (朱砂) 5 don (cover half). Grind these drugs, knead in boiled down honey, and make into pills the size of Euryales Semen (芡實) and cover in Cinnabaris (朱砂). Chew on 1 or 2 pills at a time and drink tea or warm alcohol if necessary. ② When the migraines cause a stuffy nose and sensory disorders in smelling, take this medication a few times and a lump of pus will come out with a sneeze. Then it will be cured shortly.
12 Headaches Due to Wind-cold 風寒頭痛 풍한두통
If the upper body is damaged due to Wind-Cold and pathogenic qi invading the meridians and collaterals causing convulsions and headaches, or if the Wind-Cold pathogen lingers in the yang meridian and causes migraines or overall headaches, use Three Five Seven Powder, Chuanxiong and Magnolia Flower Decoction, Chuanxiong, Angelica Root, Cyperus and Perilla Powder, Holy Effect Biscuit.
• Three Five Seven Powder 三五七散 삼오칠산: It treats headaches and faintness of the eyes due to Wind-Cold invading the brain. Saposhnikoviae Radix (防風) 2 nyang, Corni Fructus (山茱萸), Zingiberis Rhizoma (乾薑) (baked wrapped in wet paper), Poria Sclerotium Rubra (赤茯苓) 1.5 nyang each, Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata (附子) (baked wrapped in wet paper), Asiasari Radix et Rhizoma (細辛) 7.5 don each. Grind these drugs and add to warm alcohol 2 don at a time or slice and add 3 slices of Zingiberis Rhizoma Crudus (生薑) and 2 Zizyphi Fructus (大棗) per 7 don and decoct in water to take.
• Chuanxiong and Magnolia Flower Decoction 芎辛湯 궁신탕: It treats Wind-Cold dampness in the brain that causes headaches ‧ dizziness ‧ vomiting. Cnidii Rhizoma (川芎) 3 don, Asiasari Radix et Rhizoma (細辛), Atractylodis Rhizoma Alba (白朮) 1.5 don each, Glycyrrhizae Radix (甘草) 1 don. Slice these drugs to make 1 package, add 5 slices of Zingiberis Rhizoma Crudus (生薑) and a small amount of Jakseol Tea (Sparrow’s Tongue Tea) and decoct in water.
13 Damp Heat Headache 濕熱頭痛습열두통
Stuffiness in the chest and headaches are due to disease in the chest. This is a Damp heat headache. Use Blue Sky Paste, Minor Blue Sky Paste. Also, the emetic method is performed.
• Blue Sky Paste 淸空膏 청공고: ① It treats migraines and overall headaches caused by Wind-Dampness heat. Scutellariae Radix (黃芩) 3 nyang (half raw and half soaked in alcohol and roasted), Glycyrrhizae Radix (甘草) (baked) 1.5 nyang, Saposhnikoviae Radix (防風), Osterici Radix (羌活), Coptidis Rhizoma (黃連) (soaked in alcohol roasted) 1 nyang each, Bupleuri Radix (柴胡) 7 don, and Cnidii Rhizoma (川芎) 5 don. Grind these drugs and add to tea 2 don at a time and apply to the inside of the mouth and swallow with boiled water before going to bed. ② Blue Sky Paste is effective for all headaches with the exception of blood deficiency caused headache, which is accompanied with pain that continues from the neck on the border of the hairline (魚眉).
• Minor Blue Sky Paste 小靑空膏 소청공고: It treats such things as mentioned above. Slice Scutellariae Radix (黃芩) (Thick ones with soft Insides) into thin pieces, soak in alcohol, dry in the sun, and grind. Add to tea water 2 don at a time, or add to alcohol.
