Understanding 6 Meridian Instead of 12 Meridian Theory

It is not easy to understand the spleen and the lung meridian are one meridian, and the large intestine and the stomach meridian are sharing the same characteristics and functions.

At school, we have taught that there are 12 meridians, and we did not think over the name of each meridian. For example, the lung meridian’s actual name is Hand Taiyin Lungs Meridian (手太陰肺經), and the spleen’s name is Feet Taiyin Spleen Meridian (足太陰脾經). Meridians such as the lungs and spleen use Taiyin, and students or professors did not pay attention to the word. According to Huang Di Nei Jing (Yellow Emperor’s Inner Canon), all Taiyin meridians are considered as one meridian because there are connected and share the same Taiyin energy. Before the 12 meridian theories was developed, there was six meridian theory. Six meridians are divided by hands and feet to make 12 meridians. In practical thinking, three yin meridians start from feet and end on the tip of the fingers.

As we see a patient with cardiovascular diseases, Feet Lessor Yin Liver meridian and Hands Lessor Yin Pericardia meridians are interrelated. Treatment of either the Liver meridian or the Pericardia meridian help reducing symptoms due to cardiovascular diseases. That tells that two meridians affect each other most than other meridians. Therefore, cardiovascular symptoms are the problem of the Lessor Yin meridian.

In the case of fullness symptoms of the Lessor yin meridian, the pluse of cun parts of the right and left wrist are converted to floating and slippery. Symptoms of stroke and cardiac infarction cause stuffy feeling on the upper chest and make a patient hard for breading and change the pulse shape of left cun as full. The best treatment for the symptoms is flush Qi by stimulation of Feet Lessor yin Liver meridian. Way to flush Qi from the upper body is inserting on starting acupuncture point of the liver meridian, Lv 1, and ending point of Pericardia meridian, PC 9 to enhance Qi circulation on whole the Lessor yin meridian.

Places Where Most Problems Seen

Throughout my past clinical experiences, treatments of the Lessor yin meridian have been useful for the cardiovascular-related symptom. Therefore, I would like to share my experiences.

Every Yang meridian starts from hands and end on feet as a long channel. Major health-related issues are easily found where the connecting point of the same meridian on the head and face area, which are the same-named meridian connected as one meridian.

Headache on the forehead starts from indigestion. Migraine on St 1 and Li 20 parts are due to neurological reasons. And Gb1 and Te 23 also place where the pain exit.

Pathogen like coldness is causing stiffness on the back of the neck and upper shoulder or symptoms round eyes on where Bl 1 exit and ears on where Si19 are. Possibilities are having more pain where is not yang meridian intercourses. So it is required to find possible other symptoms on where hands and feet meridian meet.

Yin meridians that spread from the upper and lower body do not have trouble with body trunk. But most problems are shown on the point where the sky, the earth, and human meridians meet.

For example, the spleen meridian, which is one of the earth meridians and the heart meridian which is belonged to the sky meridian meet Sp 21 and Ht 1. Places like Sp 21 and Ht 1 are most commonplace where the problem appears. And acupuncture point K27 and Pc1, which are on palaces where Kidneys and the pericardia meridian meet, are the possible point for having pain or symptoms.

Also, Lv14 is related to the Feet Lessor yin Liver meridian and also one of the human meridians and Lu1 is referred to as the Hands Taiyin Lungs meridian, and one of the earth meridians meet on the Lv 14 and Lu 1. Those two are the most commonplace where disruption of Qi circulation would occur.
