Cases That Apply Bisoma Acupuncture For Low Back Pain

By David Lee, L.Ac.

Bisoma Acupuncture uses two sets of Horary points to easily treat low back pain. It is clinically proven to be applicable for all groups of people.

For 70% of population, the Horary points of LI1, UB66, GB41, SI5, and ST36 are effective.

Case 1

Patient Information: The patient is a 45-year-old woman who is a homemaker.

Complaint: The patient experienced a re-injury to her lumbar region just two weeks after undergoing a discectomy procedure. An MRI scan revealed a 2 mm disc protrusion. Although the patient received two epidurals and took Gabapentin, they provided only slight relief. Two months ago, the pain became so severe that the patient was bedridden for eight days. The only position that brought some relief was lying on the left side with a pillow placed between her legs.

Treatment: The patient noticed a significant reduction in pain immediately after her first treatment. With each successive visit, the intensity, frequency, and duration of the pain decreased. By the 12th treatment session, the patient was able to walk for over two miles and do daily house chores comfortably.

Case 2

Patient Information: Alan C. is a 77-year-old male and a retired college professor.

Complaint: The patient has been experiencing back pain for the past two years. The low back pain began when he fell backwards onto the floor while pulling out a cart with his feet on the wheels at a market. He heard a pop in his spine and upon examination, stenosis and arthritis were discovered in the lumbar region. He has been having trouble finding a comfortable sleeping position at night, which resulted in him waking up every two hours. The pain was sharp, like a needle, and was so severe that he couldn’t do physical therapy. Tramadol, a pain medication, did not alleviate the pain and caused constipation.

Treatment: Immediately after the first session, he experienced relief that exceeded his expectations. There was an improvement in his range of motion in all planes, and the following morning he continued to feel better. The frequency of waking up decreased as he received subsequent treatments. His low back was stiff in mornings, but walking helped relieve the pain. By the 8th visit, he reported a 95% reduction in his overall pain level.

For the other 30% of population, the Horary points of GB44, SI2, ST43, LI5, UB40 are effective in healing low back pain.

Case 3

Patient Information: The patient is a 42-year-old male who worked in restaurant supply sales.

Complaint: The patient had been suffering from chronic low back pain since he was 20 years old due to a bulging lumbar disc from playing sports. An X-ray revealed severe arthritis. Two weeks ago, he emptied a swimming pool. Next day, he reached forward to pick up an object, which caused a frozen lumbar. Pain was easily aggravated by a one-hour daily commute to work. His work duty had to be light. Although he woke up with less pain in the morning, it was easily aggravated, and stretching and rest only provided slight relief.

Treatment: The first two treatments, which utilized right side Yang Horary points of LI1, UB66, GB41, SI5, and ST36, did not alleviate the patient’s pain. However, a switch to Wood-Order points of GB44, SI2, ST43, LI5, and UB40 at the third session resulted in a slight reduction in pain. With further treatments, the patient experienced incremental daily improvement in his low back pain. Despite the presence of severe arthritis, the patient reported an overall 80-90% reduction in pain intensity, frequency, and duration by the eighth visit.

Case 4

Patient Information: Malcolm M. was a 69-year-old retired male.

Complaint: The patient reported experiencing acute pain on the right side of his lower back. While he was able to rotate his torso laterally, swinging a golf club with forward flexion and lateral rotation caused excruciating pain. The pain started when he reached forward to grab an object one week ago.

Treatment: The patient received a total of six acupuncture treatments. The first two treatments were right-side Yang Horary points in the Metal-Order of LI1, UB66, GB41, SI5, and ST36. But there was no noticeable improvement. On the third visit, the acupuncturist switched to Wood-Order points of GB44, SI2, ST43, LI5, and UB40, which resulted in an immediate and dramatic relief of pain. The patient reported daily improvement in intensity, frequency, and duration. By the fifth visit, he reported an overall 85% relief in pain. He played 18 holes of golf with mild aggravation, but the next day, his condition was even better than before the game. By the sixth visit, the patient reported that the pain was at least 95% gone.
