Jiawei-Xiaoyao-San, found in He Ji Ju Fang, mainly restores liver-qi stagnation and blood deficiency in women’s livers and spleens. So this prescription improves the resulting hot flashes and sweat, heat vexation, facial skin disorder, insomnia, angler control disorder, and menopausal depression. Before the time of the development of hormone therapy, Jiawei-Xiaoyao-San was widely used for these symptoms; even today, this prescription is favored by patients who do not have adequate hormone therapy due to a family history of tumors.
This prescription was made by combining Sini-San and Danggui-Shaoyao-San and adding Zhizi, Mudanpi, Ganjiang, and Bohe. Sini-San includes Chaihu so that it can alleviate depression-syndrome of liver-qi and neurotic symptoms; Danggui-Shaoya-San has the functions of replenish blood, activate blood circulation, invigorate the spleen, and eliminate dampness; Chaihu, Zhizi, and Mudanpi clear away blood-heat, menopausal hot flash and sweat. The hot flash treated by Jiawei-Xiaoyao-San can be seen as another vexation, and Chaihu, Zhizi, and Mudanpi improve it.
Among the constituent drugs of this prescription, Chaihu is a monarch drug that recovers irritable neurological symptoms by dispersing accumulated fire in the Shaoyang channel. So, this drug resolves liver-qi stagnation and improves symptoms such as menopausal feverish sensation accompanied by restlessness, anger, irritation, mental depression, sleeplessness, menstrual irregularity, etc.
Danggui, Shaoyao, Baizhu, and Fuling are minister drugs.
- Danggui supplements and activates blood, and Shaoyao replenisYin yin and blood.
- Baizhu invigorates the spleen, benefits qi, and induces diuresis; Fuling promotes diuresis and dispels damp phlegm to relieve insomnia, uneasiness, and palpitation.
These four drugs in Danggui-Shaoyao-San boost qi and blood circulation and calm the body.
- Zhizi. Mudanpi, Ganjiang, and Bohe are adjuvant drugs.
- Zhizi clears heat, drains fire, and eliminates feverish sensation in the heart.
- Mudanpi cools the blood and resolves blood stagnation.
- Bohe disperses wind heat and dissipates a feeling of hypochondrial expansion.
Ganjiang and Zhizi form Zhizi-Ganjiang-Tang to balance cold and heat, easing neurological symptoms. Ganjiang also prevents foot-cold caused by Chaihu raising qi and blood.
Gancao is an invigorating-qi drug that acts as an adjuvant drug and also serves as a guiding drug that mediates other medicines with a sweet taste.
Jiawei-Xiaoyao-San treats hot flashes, sweating, and menopausal symptoms when abdominal signs like FFOCH, hypertonicity, and palpitation appear. It also helps with dermatitis, eczema, irregular menstruation, and anger issues, especially in those who enjoy meat and spicy food.

This prescription treats the following symptoms such as tired from lack of blood, fever sensation of five centers, sore and painful limbs, heavy head and dim eyes, discomfort and red cheeks, dry mouth and dry throat, feverish and night sweating, reduced meals and desire of frequent lying down, abdominal pain around the umbilicus, women’s irregular menstruation due to blood-heat, chills and fever like malaria. In addition, it can improve that unmarried women develop Yin-deficiency symptoms due to lack of blood and an imbalance between ying-qi and wei-qi, which causes phlegm-cough and hectic-fever, the body becomes thin and bone-heat syndrome. Distinction
Qingxin-Lianzi-Yin: In addition to Jiawei-Xiaoyao-San, Qingxin-Lianzi-Yin also treats facial blushing. Jiawei-Xiaoyao-San addresses blushing caused by liver-qi stagnation, with symptoms appearing multiple times daily. Its treatment disperses liver-qi and clears heat using Caihu, Zhizi, and Mudanpi. Qingxin-Lianzi-Yin targets persistent redness from heart fire due to Yin-fluid deficiency, using Maimendong to nourYin Yin and subdue the fire.
