05 Ten Kinds of Phlegm Diseases 痰病有十10가지 담병
There are ten kinds of phlegm diseases. They are wind, cold, dampness, heat, stagnated, qi, food, alcohol, and fright phlegm. The causes of phlegm diseases are not singular. Phlegm diseases can be caused by heat, qi, wind, fright, drinking water, eating, hot weather, cold things, a deficient spleen, alcohol, and deficient kidneys.
05-1 Wind Phlegm 風痰풍담
The person with wind phlegm might experience hemiplegia, dizziness due to head wind, dizziness and heaviness due to secret wind, spasms in the body due to a convulsive disease. Qingzhou Typhonium Balls or a Guide Out Phlegm Decoction should be prescribed.
- Qingzhou Typhonium Balls 靑州白圓子 청주백원자: It treats vomiting, dizziness, and hemiplegia caused by wind phlegm. Grind 7 nyang of Pinelliae Tuber (半夏), 3 nyang of Arisaematis Rhizoma (南星), 2 nyang of Aconiti Koreani Tuber (白附子), and 5 don of Aconiti Tuber (川烏). Put this in water for five days in spring, three days in summer, seven days in autumn, and ten days in winter and renew the water every day and night. After this, filter the leftover and filter again until the leftover disappears. Wait until the powder settles and remove the water. Grind this again and mix with the upper part of sweet rice soup and make pills to a size of a Phaseoli Radiati Semen (綠豆). Swallow 30~50 pills with water boiled with
ginger. - Guide Out Phlegm Decoction 導痰湯 도담탕: It treats wind phlegm. Cut 2 don of Pinelliae Tuber (半夏) (soaked in the
juice of Zingiberis Rhizoma Crudus (生薑汁) and dried), and 1 don of steamed Arisaematis Rhizoma (南星) (wrapped in oil paper and roasted), Citrus Unshius Pericarpium (橘紅), Aruantii Fructus Immaturus (枳殼), Poria Sclerotium (赤茯苓), and Glycyrrhizae Radix (甘草) to make 1 package. Put 5 pieces of ginger and boil this with water and drink.
05-2 Cold Phlegm 寒痰 한담
Cold phlegm (寒痰) is also called cool phlegm (冷痰). The person with this syndrome cannot move the four limbs and experiences sharp pain due to a bone impediment. There is no vexing heat and cold qi aggregates. A Warm the Center and Dissolve the Phlegm Pill, Warm Stomach and Dissolve Phlegm Pill, or a New Method Pinellia Pill should be prescribed.
- Warm Center and Dissolve Phlegm Pill 溫中化痰丸 온중화담환: It treats nausea and hiccups due to cold phlegm. Grind the same amounts of Citri Unshius Pericarpium Immaturus (靑皮), Citrus Unshius Pericarpium (陳皮), Alpiniae Officinari Phizoma (良薑), and Zingiberis Rhizoma Crudus (乾薑). Knead this with vinegar starch and make pills to the size of the seed of the royal foxglove tree. Take 50 pills of these with gruel.
- Warm Stomach and Dissolve Phlegm Pill 溫胃化痰丸 온위화담환: It treats cold phlegm or cool phlegm between the chest and diaphragm. Grind 3 nyang of Pinelliae Tube Preparata (processed), 2 nyang of Zingiberis Rhizoma Crudus (乾薑) (wrapped with damp paper and then roasted), Atractylodis Rhizoma Alba (白朮) (dried over a fire), and Citrus Unshius
Pericarpium (陳皮). Mix these with the juice of Zingiberis Rhizoma Crudus (生薑汁) and make pills to the size of the seed of the royal foxglove tree. Take 20~30 pills with water boiled with ginger. - New Method Pinellia Pill Decoction 新法半夏湯 신법반하탕: It treats nausea, an uncomfortable stomach and lack of appetite due to cold phlegm in the spleen and stomach. Powder 4 nyang of big Pinelliae Tuber (半夏) (Cut this and soak for a day in water boiled with 1 nyang of Alumen. Filter this and soak again in Zingiberis Rhizoma Crudus juice for a day. Boil
this down and dry on a fire and then powder this.), 2 nyang of Glycyrrhizae Radix (甘草) (roasted), 1 nyang of Citrus Unshius Pericarpium (橘紅), aAmomi Fructus (砂仁), Massa Medicata Fermentata (神麯) (stir-fried) and Amomi Tsao-ko
Fructus (草果), and 5 don of Syzygii Flos (丁香) and Amomi Fructus Rotundus (白豆蔲). Take 1 don of these with water boiled with ginger and salt.
05-3 Damp Phlegm 濕痰 습담
Use a Spiritual Atractylodes Pill for a person with damp phlegm who experiences heaviness of the body, weakness, and tiredness. Use the Spiritual Atractylodes Pill (the formula is explained above), Mountain Spirit Pill, Three Immortals Pill or Syzygii Flos Relieve Stomach Decoction with Atractylodis Rhizoma Alba (白朮) and Atractylodis Rhizoma (蒼朮).
- Mountain Spirit Pill 山精丸 산정환: It strengthens the spleen, extinguishes Fire, and dries damp phlegm. 2 geun of Atractylodis Rhizoma (蒼朮) (Soak this in rice water for three days and cut the peel with a bamboo knife and dry under the shade.) And 1 mal of ripen mulberry (in juice form). Powder 1 geun of Atractylodis Rhizoma (蒼朮) (soaked in mulberry juice and dried under the sun, repeat this process for nine times, and powder this), Lycii Fructus (枸杞子) and Lycii Radicis cortex (地骨皮). Knead these with honey and make the pill as big as the seed of the royal foxglove tree. Swallow 100 pills of these with warm water.
- Three Immortals Pill 三仙丸 삼선환: It treats damp phlegm. Powder 1 geun of Arisaematis Rhizoma (南星) and Pinelliae Tuber (半夏). Mix this with the juice of Zingiberis Rhizoma Crudus (生薑汁) and make pounded rice cake. Put this on the sieve and cover this with the paper mulberry leaf or Artemisiae Argyi Folium (艾葉). When its color becomes yellowish, dry this under the sun, and make yeast between May and June. Put 2 nyang of Cyperi Rhizoma (香附子) into 4 nyang of this yeast. Also add the juice of Zingiberis Rhizoma Crudus (生薑汁). Knead this to pills to the size of the seed of the royal foxglove tree. Take 50 pills with water boiled with ginger.
05-4 Heat Phlegm 熱痰 열담
① Heat phlegm (熱痰) is also known as Fire phlegm (火痰). The symptoms of heat phlegm are heat vexation, accumulation of dried phlegm, and flushing of the head and face. Also, other symptoms are the formation of festers around the eyes, blockage of the throat, madness and heartburn, and palpitations. Use a Clear Qi and Dissolve Phlegm Pill, Augmented Mild Laxative Pill, Minor Center Regulating Decoction, Great Center Regulating Decoction, Scutellaria Decoction Benefit Diaphragm Pill, Regulate the Center and Break up Phlegm Decoction, or Clear Heat and Guide Out Phlegm Decoction.[B073] ② Heat phlegm is yellow in color.
- Clear Qi and Dissolve Phlegm Pill 淸氣化痰丸 청기화담환: It treats heat phlegm. 2 nyang of Pinelliae Tube Preparata (processed), 1.5 nyang of Citrus Unshius Pericarpium (陳皮) and Poria Sclerotium (赤茯苓), 1 nyang of Scutellariae Radix (黃芩), Forsythiae Fructus (連翹), Gardeniae Fructus (梔子), Platycodonis Radix (桔梗) and Glycyrrhizae Radix (甘草), and 5 don of Menthae Herba (薄荷) and Schizonepetae Spica (荊芥). Powder these herbs and mix with the juice of Zingiberis Rhizoma Crudus (生薑汁) paste. Make pills the size of the seed of the royal foxglove tree. Take 50 pills with water boiled with ginger. This formula is a combination of a Syzygii Flos Relieve Stomach Decoction (二陳湯) and Cool Rib Cage Powder.
- Augmented Mild Laxative Pill 加味潤下丸 가미윤하환: It brings phlegm heat down. 8 nyang of Citrus Unshius Pericarpium (橘紅), 2 nyang of Pinelliae Tuber (半夏) (sliced) (melt 5 don of salt into water and mix Citrus Unshius Pericarpium (橘紅) and Pinelliae Tuber (半夏) together and steam, boil down, and dry), and 1 nyang of Arisaematis Rhizoma (南星), Scutellariae Radix (黃芩), Coptidis Rhizoma (黃連), and Glycyrrhizae Radix (甘草). Powder these drugs and knead with
rice cake soaked in the juice of Zingiberis Rhizoma Crudus (生薑汁). Make pills with these drugs to the size of mung beans. Take 50 – 70 pills with boiled water. - Minor Regulate Channel Decoction 小調中湯 소조중탕: It treats all phlegm heat and various strange diseases. This has a great effect on harmonizing the spleen and stomach. Stir-fry the same amounts of Glycyrrhizae Radix (甘草) soaked in water boiled with Coptidis Rhizoma (黃連), Coptidis Rhizoma (黃連) soaked in water boiled with Glycyrrhizae Radix (甘草), Pinelliae Tuber (半夏) soaked in water boiled with Trichosanthis Semen (瓜蔞仁), and Trichosanthis Semen (瓜蔞仁) soaked in water boiled with Pinelliae Tuber (半夏) until the water dries. Cut these drugs and boil 5 don of each of these with 3 pieces of ginger and drink. Or grind the four herbs and mix this with paste made with Alpiniae Officinari Phizoma (良薑). Make pills the size of the seed of the royal foxglove tree. Take 50 pills with boiled water. This method will result in a profound effect.
- Great Regulate Center Decoction 大調中湯 대조중탕: It is best in treating phlegm heat and a deficiency. This formula is the addition of Ginseng Radix (人參), Atractylodis Rhizoma Alba (白朮), Poria Sclerotium (白茯苓), Cnidii Rhizoma (川芎), Angelica Gigantis Radix (當歸), Rehmanniae Radix Crudus (生地黃), and Paeoniae Radix (白芍藥) to the previous formula.
- Scutellaria Decoction Benefit Diaphragm Pill 黃芩利膈丸 황금이격환: It removes heat in the chest and circulates phlegm in the diaphragm. 1 nyang of Scutellariae Radix (黃芩) (raw one) and Scutellariae Radix (黃芩) (stir-fried one), 5 don of Pinelliae Tube Preparata (processed), Coptidis Rhizoma (黃連) and Alismatis Rhizoma (澤瀉), 3 don of Arisaematis Rhizoma (南星) (covered with damp paper and then roasted), Aruantii Fructus Immaturus (枳殼) and Citrus Unshius Pericarpium (陳皮), 2 don of Atractylodis Rhizoma Alba (白朮), 1 don of Alumen (白礬), 5 don of Raphani Radix (蘿蔔子) (stir-fried one), and 1 don of Gleditsiae Fructus (皂角). Grind these drugs and knead with rice cake. Make pills to the size of the seed of the royal foxglove tree. Take 50 pills of this with boiled water.
- Regulate Center and Break up Phlegm Decoction 理中豁痰湯 이중활담탕: It has profound effect in treating heat phlegm in the diaphragm or stomach. 1 don of Atractylodis Rhizoma Alba (白朮), and Paeoniae Radix (白芍藥), 7 pun of Ginseng Radix (人參), Poria Sclerotium (白茯苓), Pinelliae Tube Preparata (processed), Trichosanthis Semen (瓜蔞仁), Citrus Unshius Pericarpium (陳皮), Asparagi Tuber (天門冬) and Hordei Vulgaris Fructus (麥芽) (stir-fried one), 5 pun of Scutellariae Radix (黃芩) (stir-fried after soaked in alcohol), Cyperi Rhizoma (香附子) (stir-fried after soaked in salt water), Coptidis Rhizoma (黃連) (stir-fried after soaked in the juice of Zingiberis Rhizoma Crudus (生薑汁)) and Platycodonis Radix (桔梗), and 3 pun of Ponciri Fructus Immaturus (枳實) and Glycyrrhizae Radix (甘草). Cut these drugs to make 1 package. Boil this with water and remove the waste. Add 2 spoons of the juice of Zingiberis Rhizoma Crudus (生薑汁) and 6 spoons of the Bambusae Caulis in Liquamen (竹瀝) and drink.
- Clear Heat and Guide Out Phlegm Decoction 淸熱導痰湯 청열도담탕: It treats chills and fever, dizziness, blurred vision, dyspnea due to the upflow of qi, and the formation of foam from the mouth. The person gets damage from the seven emotions, causing blockage of the orifices of the heart. This moves the spirit away from its place. When the spirit loses its
place, the house becomes empty; when the house becomes empty, phlegm is formed. 7 pun of Coptidis Rhizoma (黃連), Scutellariae Radix (黃芩), Trichosanthis Semen (瓜蔞仁), Arisaematis Rhizoma (南星) (covered with damp paper and
roasted), Pinelliae Tube Preparata (processed), Citrus Unshius Pericarpium (陳皮), Poria Sclerotium (赤茯苓), and Platycodonis Radix (桔梗), Atractylodis Rhizoma Alba (白朮), Ginseng Radix, and 5 pun of Ponciri Fructus Immaturus (枳實) and Glycyrrhizae Radix (甘草). Cut these drugs to make 1 package. Boil these drugs with 3 pieces of ginger and 2 dates. Add Bambusae Caulis In Liquamen (竹瀝) and the juice of Zingiberis Rhizoma Crudus (生薑汁) and drink.
