Chuan Xiong Gui Zhi Tang 천궁계지탕 treats COVID-19 and its variants.

By David Lee L.Ac

Soeumin means a Lesser Yin constitution in Korean Sasang Four Constitutional Medicine. The premise of Sasang Medicine is that humans are born with imbalances that make them prone to disease. Whether external pathogenic factors are causes or aggravators, the treatment is to assist the constitution in overcoming the disease.

The theories of constitutional and Chinese medicine and contrast; Chinese Medicine views humans are born as a blank slate. The external climatic pathogenic factors cause an imbalance in these perfect individuals, resulting in disease.

Sasang rearranged the same Asian herbal ingredients to fit the Lesser Yin constitutions, which are of a cold body type. To counteract the coldness, warming herbal ingredients are used.

Although there are only a few constitutional formulas, they treat various health issues. It is because the constitutional ingredients support the body to self-treat efficiently. Therefore, a variety of diseases can be treated with a few herbal formulas. At my clinic, the following formulas were commonly used to treat stubborn diseases, including the ones impossible to cure by biomolecular medicine.

Indications: Treats cold, flu, and influenza, even COVID and variants. Also, it treats upper body muscle-tendon problems in the neck, shoulder, and limbs.

Caution: Gui zhi can aggravate skin conditions such as acne, shingles, pruritis, and eczema.

Indications: Pain in the sternum, intercostal, and costal angle accompanied by high stress, such as fibromyalgia, hypochondriac pain, and stifling sensation in the chest. Elevated liver enzyme due to infection, medication, or alcohol.

Common Indications: Severe facial acne, shingles, pruritis, and eczema. Tinnitus. Hard stool.

Indications: Various headaches such as tension, common migraine, classical migraine, and cluster. Anxiety and depression. Various period issues include PMS and irregular, painful, and excessive periods.

Indications: For weakened patients such as the elderly, post-partum mothers, and those recovering from a long illness. A tonic for the elderly and children who are not thriving.

Common Indications: Raynaud’s condition. Chills easily. Chronic cold hands and feet. Sjogren’s disease is due to a lack of moisture produced by glands.

Indications: Dizziness and vertigo. Chronic fatigue. Spontaneous sweating. Unresolved open sores and unhealing flesh. Frequent viral, bacterial, and fungal infections.

Indications: Profuse sweating and hot flashes due to menopause. Hyperhidrosis.

Indications: Cold and flu, allergic rhinitis, indigestion, abdominal bloating and cramping, nausea, vomiting, and loose stool.

Indications: Irritable bowel syndrome. Genito-urinary problems include pelvic inflammatory disease, ovarian cysts, and fallopian tube obstruction. Mental stress, anxiety, and depression. A tonic for an academically stressed student.

Indications: Severe digestive tract problems such as Barret’s esophagus, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, and antibiotic-resistant bacteria such as Clostridium Difficile.

There are two major Lesser Yin constitutions’ issues that a practitioner needs to be aware of. One is spontaneous sweating. It means there is not enough Qi to keep the skin pores closed. Hyperhidrosis of the whole body from small movements such as vacuuming, brisk walking, or menopause indicates that the formula containing Chuan Xiong 천궁 is contraindicated.

The other major issue is a digestive problem with bloating and loose stools. This is an internal condition that can be aggravated even with mild digestive support formulas such as Shi Quan Da Bu Tang 십전대보탕, Ba Wu Jun Zi Tang 팔물군자탕, and Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang 보중익기탕.
