19 Vaginal Discharge in Five Colors 五色帶下 오색대하
➀ What is the difference between vaginal discharge of the five colors? The master replied, “White vaginal discharge is like snot, red vaginal discharge is like red silk, yellow vaginal discharge is like rotten cucumber, blue vaginal discharge has a dark blue color, and black vaginal discharge is like aggregated blood.”
➁ The vaginal discharge of the five colors is like the following. If the liver is damaged the color is blue like mud; if the heart is damaged, the color is red like red fluid, and humor; if the lungs are damaged the color is white like snot; if the spleen is damaged the color is yellow like rotten cucumber; and if the kidneys are damaged the color is black like aggregated blood.
➂ The five colors of vaginal discharges each correspond to the five viscera; if all of the five viscera are deficient, all five colors show in the vaginal discharge. These are all illnesses of the blood.
➃ In cases of vaginal discharge with all five colors, a stomach Wind Decoction [see the chapter on Feces for the prescription], Five Types of Accumulation [see the chapter on Cold for the prescription] with Ephedrae Herba (麻黃) replaced with Schizonepetae Spica (荊芥), Terba Flava Usta Powder [prescription has been aforementioned], Warming and Clearing Drink,
Sanguisorba Powder or Cyperus Powder should be used.
- Warming and Clearing Drink 溫淸飮 온청음: It treats the condition in which vaginal discharge does not stop and shows all five colors. There are also symptoms of yellow complexion, stomachaches and alternating chills and fever. It is also known by the name of Resolve Toxicity Four Ingredients Decoction (解毒四物湯). [prescription has been aforementioned].
- Sanguisorba Powder 地楡散 지유산: It treats vaginal discharge of all five colors, yellow complexion, and loss of weight. Cut up 3 nyang of Sanguisorbae Radix (地楡) and boil about 10 times in 1 doe of vinegar. Take 1 hop on an empty stomach while still hot.
- Cyperus Powder 香附散 향부산: It treats vaginal discharge of all five colors and the flooding of the blood. Remove the hair from Cyperi Rhizoma (香附子), smash and pound, and boil down in vinegar for half a day. Dry by a fire and grind into powder. Take 2 don with thin rice gruel on an empty stomach and the effects will be wonderful.
20 Coldness in the Blood Chamber 寒入血室 한이 혈실에 들어간 것
The menstruation has stopped, the pulse is sunken and tight, and there is genital pain and a cold feeling around the navel area. The pain is due to coldness in the blood chamber which has caused the blood to gather up and be blocked. A Cinnamomum and Peach seed Decoction should be used.
- Cinnamomum and Peach Seed Decoction 桂枝桃仁湯 계지도인탕: ➀ 2 don of Cinnamomi Ramulus, Paeoniae Radix (赤芍藥), and Rehmanniae Radix (生乾地黃) (washed with wine), 1 don of Glycyrrhizae Radix (甘草) (rosted), and 30 Persicae Semen (桃仁). Cut up these herbs and decoct in water with 3 pieces of Zingiberis Rhizoma (生薑) and 2 Zizyphi Fructus (大棗) as 1 package. ➁ Auspicious Golden Deity Powder is also fine [prescription has been aforementioned].
21 Heat in the Blood Chamber 熱入血室열이 혈실에 들어간 것
If a woman with fever from Cold Damage happens to experience the start or end of menstruation during this period and is lucid by day but talks nonsense by night like she saw a ghost, this is because heat has entered the blood chamber. A Bupleurum Break Blood Stasis Decoction or Regulate Menses Decoction should be used.
- Bupleurum Break Blood Stasis Decoction 柴胡破瘀湯 시호파어탕: It treats fever in the blood chamber and blood amassment. 2 don of Bupleuri Radix (柴胡), 1 don each of Scutellariae Radix (黃芩), Pinelliae Tuber (半夏), Paeoniae Radix (赤芍藥), Angelica Gigantis Radix (當歸), and Rehmanniae Radix Crudus (生地黃), 5 pun each of Persicae Semen (桃仁), Trogopterorum Faeces (五靈脂), and Glycyrrhizae Radix (甘草). Cut up these herbs and decoct in water as 1 package.
- Regulate Menses Decoction 調經湯 조경탕: ➀ It treats heat in the blood chamber. 1.5 don each of Bupleuri Radix (柴胡) and Rehmanniae Radix Crudus (生地黃), 1 don each of Paeoniae Radix (赤芍藥), Angelica Gigantis Radix (當歸), and Scutellariae Radix (黃芩), and 5 pun each of Pinelliae Tuber (半夏), Ginseng Radix (人參), Cnidii Rhizoma (川芎), and Glycyrrhizae Radix (甘草). Cut up these herbs and decoct in water with 3 pieces of Zingiberis Rhizoma (生薑) and 2 Zizyphi Fructus (大棗) as 1 package. ➁ This prescription is a combination of a Minor Bupleurum Decoction and Four Substances Decoction.
22 When Menstruation Stops and Starts Once Again 經斷復行 월경이 끊어졌다가 다시 나오는 것
When a woman reaches the age of 49, the heavenly tenth [This is the heavenly stem in charge of reproduction] must stop naturally. However, if menstruation continues every month or the amount has increased and does not stop, a Scutellaria Heart Pill, Cyperi and Scutellaria Pill, Angelica Powder, or Augmented Four Substances Decoction should be used.
- Scutellaria Heart Pill 芩心丸 금심환: It can be used when menstruation restarts after the heavenly tenth has passed or when flooding does not stop. Soak 2 nyang of Scutellariae Radix (黃芩) (thin and full inside) in used water left from washing rice [vinegar in some literature] for a day and roast dry. Then, repeat the soaking and roasting 7 times, grind into powder and knead with vinegar-added paste to form pills as big as the seed of a royal foxglove tree. Take 70 pills twice a day on an empty stomach with warm wine.
- Cyperi and Scutellaria Pill 子芩丸 자금환: It treats the aforementioned condition. 4 nyang of Scutellariae Radix (黃芩) (cut up Scutellariae Radix (黃芩) that is thin and full inside and soak in vinegar until sufficiently saturated. Then wrap up in paper and bury in cinders and roast. Repeat the process 7 times), and 2 nyang each of Angelica Gigantis Radix (當歸) (washed with wine) and Cyperi Rhizoma (香附子) (soaked in vinegar and stir-fried). Grind up these herbs and knead with vinegar-added paste to form pills as big as the seed of a royal foxglove tree. Take 50~70 pills on an empty stomach.
- Angelica Powder 當歸散 당귀산: ➀ It treats irregular menstruation after the heavenly tenth [This is the heavenly stem in charge of reproduction] has passed, or when there is no menstruation for over 3~4 months. It can also be used when there are two menstruations within one month and pain in the back and stomach. The Inner Classic (內經) talks about ‘seven losses and eight gains’which indicates the woman’s age of 49. Menstruation past its due date is caused by a surplus of blood and it should not be stopped forcefully. It should only be stopped when the time is right. It is better if there isn’t any pain in the back. 1 nyang each of Angelica Gigantis Radix (當歸), Cnidii Rhizoma (川芎), Paeoniae Radix Alba (白芍藥) (stir-fried), and Scutellariae Radix (黃芩) (thin and cold inside type that has been stir-fried), and 5 don of Atractylodis Rhizoma (白朮). Grind up these herbs, mix 2 don in wine, and take on an empty stomach twice a day.[B121] ➁ The prescription in the Compendium of Effective Prescriptions for Women (良方) has 1.5 more nyang of Corni Fructus (山茱萸).
- Augmented Four Substances Decoction 加味四物湯 가미사물탕: It can be used when a woman hasn’t been menstruating for many years but starts menstruating again and shows signs of flooding, stomachache and cold and heat. Add 1 don each of Ginseng Radix (人參) and Evodiae Fructus (吳茱萸) to 4 don of a Four Substances Decoction. Cut up these herbs and decoct in water with 3 pieces of Zingiberis Rhizoma (生薑) and 2 Zizyphi Fructus (大棗) as 1 package.
