06-11 Alcohol Diarrhea 酒泄 주설
① When one drinks alcohol too much, it eventually becomes alcohol diarrhea. The person becomes skinny and will not be able to take in food, drinking only one or two glasses of water. If it is not cured for several years, a Frankincense and Deer Antler Velvet Pill (香茸丸) should be prescribed.
② For the person suffering from alcohol diarrhea, when it is especially severe after drinking alcohol, 2 don of Calm Stomach Powder (平胃散) with the addition of Syzygii Flos (丁香), Amomi Fructus (砂仁), Puerariae Radix (葛根), Hordei Vulgaris Fructus (麥芽), and Massa Medicata Fermentata (神麯), powdered and taken with thin rice gruel, should be prescribed on an empty stomach.
③ When the patient has diarrhea at early dawn from alcohol damage, 2 don of a Wine Steamed Coptis Pill together with an Order the Center Decoction, with the addition of Zingiberis Rhizoma (生薑) and Puerariae Radix (葛根), should be taken on an empty stomach. It has a great effect.
- Frankincense and Deer Antler Velvet Pill 香茸丸 향용환: It treats alcohol diarrhea.
Olibanum (乳香) 3 don, Cervi Parvum Cornu (鹿茸) (remove fur by burning in fire and roasting after being covered with condensed milk) 5 don, Myristicae Semen (肉豆蔲) (cut on both sides, Olibanum placed in the gaps, coated with flour, and baked under an ash fire) 1 nyang, and Moschus (麝香) 2 don (ground separately). Powder these medicines, make into a paste with steamed rice made of old rice, and form pills the size of a foxglove seed. Take 50 pills with porridge.
06-12 Spleen Diarrhea 脾泄 비설
① The patient with spleen diarrhea has heavy limbs, bodily discomfort, stomach discomfort, yellowish complexion, and abdominal bloating. Herbs such as Atractylodis Rhizoma (蒼朮), Magnoliae Cortex (厚朴), Aucklandiae Radix (木香), Zingiberis Rhizoma (乾薑), and raw Myristicae Semen (肉豆蔲) should be considered.
② In spleen diarrhea, the patient feels bloated after meals and comfortable once diarrhea occurs, with a fine pulse. An Aucklandia and Amomum Six Gentlemen Decoction should be prescribed.
③ Spleen diarrhea is common in elderly people or those with kidney deficiency. It is described as “Water and Earth transform to each other,” and an Evodia Decoction should be prescribed.
④ When chronic spleen diarrhea affects the kidneys, it becomes dysentery. If it is not cured for several years, a Regulate the Center and Build the Spleen Pill should be prescribed.
⑤ Chronic spleen diarrhea where the patient cannot hold feces is because spleen qi has faded away. It must be stopped immediately with herbs such as Halloysitum Rubrum (赤石脂), Myristicae Semen (肉豆蔲), and Zingiberis Rhizoma (乾薑).
⑥ In spleen diarrhea, a Stabilize Center Pill (固中丸) should be taken.
⑦ Too much support from the young may damage the spleen and cause diarrhea in the aged. A Crataegi, Massa, and Atractylodis Pill should be prescribed.
- Aucklandia and Amomum Six Gentlemen Decoction 香砂六君子湯 향사육군자탕: It treats spleen diarrhea. Cyperi Rhizoma (香附子), Amomi Fructus (砂仁), Magnoliae Cortex (厚朴), Citrus Unshius Pericarpium (陳皮), Ginseng Radix (人參), Atractylodis Rhizoma (蒼朮), Paeoniae Radix (芍藥) (fried), Atractylodis Rhizoma (蒼朮) (fried), Dioscoreae Rhizoma (山藥) (fried) 1 don each, and Glycyrrhizae Radix (甘草) (baked) 5 pun. Slice as one pack, add 3 pieces of Zingiberis Rhizoma (乾薑) and 1 Mume Fructus Praeparatum (烏梅), decoct in water, and take.
- Evodia Decoction 吳茱萸湯 오수유탕: It treats spleen diarrhea. Boil Evodiae Fructus (吳茱萸) 5 don in plain water and remove the residue. Add a little salt and take. Evodia warms the bladder, allowing urine to flow smoothly and strengthening the large intestine. Although other medicines can warm, they cannot separate urine and feces.
06-13 Kidney Diarrhea 腎泄 신설
① Kidney diarrhea is also called morning diarrhea or dawn diarrhea. Having diarrhea every dawn occurs when a patient with kidney deficiency encounters yin qi. Schisandra Powder should be prescribed.
② Diarrhea like pouring water every dawn that cannot be treated by other medicines is called spleen-kidney diarrhea. A Two Spirits Pill or Four Spirits Pill should be prescribed.
③ When an aged person has diarrhea from dual deficiencies of the spleen and kidneys, a Pig Organs Pill should be prescribed.
④ If one with kidney deficiency is damaged by excessive drinking and sexual activity, the feet become cold. If the condition becomes chronic, the patient loses flesh, has squeezing pain below the umbilicus, and loose bowels with small gastric sounds. A Two Spirits Pill, Four Spirits Pill, or Schisandra Powder should be prescribed.
⑤ Kidney diarrhea presents with shifting abdominal pain resembling dysentery, weakened bones, darkened complexion, cold soles, and a weak cubit pulse. Herbs such as Psoraleae Semen (破故紙), raw Zingiberis Rhizoma (生乾薑), Cinnamomi Cortex (桂皮), Aucklandiae Radix (木香), and Angelica Gigantis Radix (當歸) should be emphasized.
⑥ When kidney diarrhea is caused by dual deficiencies of the spleen and kidneys, Three Spirits Pill, Regulate the Center and Build the Spleen Pill, Six Spirits Decoction, Fragrant Ginger Powder, or Aucklandia Powder should be prescribed.
06-14 Fulminant Diarrhea 暴泄 폭설
① When dysentery changes from greater yang to greater yin, stools become loose like duck droppings and pour out suddenly. As this is a cold syndrome, the patient must be kept warm. An Order the Center Decoction or Starch Solution Powder should be prescribed.
② Sudden silent diarrhea with cold body, spontaneous sweating, clear urine, difficulty holding feces, dyspnea, faint pulse, and vomiting are all symptoms of cold diarrhea. Strong warming medicine such as Starch Solution Powder should be prescribed immediately.
③ Starch Solution Powder or an Early Morning Elixir should be prescribed for fulminant diarrhea.
06-15 Chronic Diarrhea 久泄 구설
① Chronic diarrhea is difficult to cure when reverting yin is stimulated, the pulse is sunken and slow, the limbs are cold, and bloody pus appears in tears or nasal discharge. Perspiration should be induced with a Cinnamomi and Ephedrae Decoction.
② Chronic diarrhea results from damaged true yin causing source qi to sink. If source qi is not raised using Tonify the Center to Augment the Qi Decoction or Four Spirits Pill, later complications will occur and be difficult to treat.
③ Chronic diarrhea caused by internal wind should be treated by inducing perspiration with an Ephedra and Cimicifuga Decoction.
④ Long-standing deficient or efflux diarrhea often transforms into dysentery. A Magnolia Bark and Aurantii Immaturus Fructus Decoction should be prescribed.
⑤ When chronic diarrhea does not stop, Psoraleae Semen (破故紙), Myristicae Semen (肉豆蔲), and Dioscoreae Rhizoma (山藥) should be considered.
⑥ Chronic diarrhea related to the liver meridian follows the principle of “Wood restraining Earth.”
⑦ Ginseng and White Atractylodes Build Spleen Pill, Eliminate Dampness and Build the Spleen Decoction, Warm Spleen Powder, or Myrobalan Powder should be prescribed.
⑧ When stomach qi is damaged by immoderate living, ascending clear qi descends and becomes diarrhea. If it progresses chronically, it turns into dysentery.
